.LOCA': GOVERNMENT
IS,IMP'ORTA 1T
What is a loealgovernmentand whatdoes
itdoforms? A local government!consists of
many -different-parts. Municipalities, 'local
oardsand,crotnmisslonsareali apart ofour
local government. Many people probably
don't realize how much our local 'govern-
mentreallydoes for us and they may it
for granted. Our local government is
responsible for providing protection of our
homes from fire. 'They provide us with
schools so everyone has an opportunity to
get a good education. Our local government
also provides us with parks and recreational
facilities so all the local people can enjoy
some fun in the town.
The local government council meets
regularly. The council makes sure requests
andpriorities of the residents in the area are
discussed; that is why each council meeting
is open to the public. So if you want
something done to improve Seaforth and
other areas, don't hold back, go straight to
your local government and let them hear
your vocal opinions. Your local government
may not realize what the residents would
like done to make your town better until so-
meone brings forward their thoughts.
1 appreciate what my local government
does for me, because they are making my
nearby town and my area a nicer place to
live in. I enjoy the use of the parks and
recreational facilities such as the arena
because it's fun to get out and have some fun
with other people. 1 appreciate the oppor-
tunity to go to a good school because it gives
me an education for a bright and successful
future ahead. The public library is good to
have too, because we can go there for infor-
mation for school projects. All of this com-
munity fun brings a lot of new friends at the
same time.
Overall I think a local government is an
important part of any town or community
because they are making your area and
mine a more enjoyable and beautiful place
to be!

WHAT THE
LOCAL GOVERNMENT
DOES FORUS'.
The local government does a lot for me! It
starts in the winter. There has been a very
bad storm and the roads are snowed in. The
McKillop Township is out there cleaning the
snow so our buses can come pick us up and
take us to school.
School is another thing that the Town of
Seaforth provides for us.. Education is an
important part of our lives. The Town of
.Seaforth gives us this opportunity to come to
school, get a good education and also meet
some great friends,

a few games and then I go home
It is already spring and those men are out

The Walton Ice Cream Shop opened Fri-
day under new management.
Robert Walker, who along with Elsie
Carter, manages the building which houses
the shop (for its Toronto-based owner
Robert Crawford) said despite the fact two
previous managers have failed to keep it go-
ing, there is potential in the enterprise. Be
said he intends to reach that potential.
"Working across the street, I'd see people
look in the window, and it (the ice cream
shop) would be closed," he .said, "And I
thought it was just a shame. A lot of people
go out for a Sunday drive and like to stop for
an ice-cream cone."
So, with the help of six employees, in -
eluding Ice Cream Shop manager Ann
Poets, Mr. Walker and Mrs. Carter re-
opened the shop. But they've expanded their
menu. In addition to offering 40 flavors of
ice cream, the shop will also offer such food
items as submarine sandwiches and pizzas,
as well as the regular assortment of
beverages.
As an added incentive to frequent the
establishment, Mr. Walker and Mrs. Carter,
have established an ice cream club.
Members receive a card numbered one to
20, and with every purchase of ice cream,
can work towards one free purchase. Fif-
teen recorded purchases will net one free ice
cream cone, and 20 recorded purchases will
net one free sundae. Club members must
'decide for themselves which of these
freebies they will work towards.
"It's something, for nothing," commented
Mr. Walker, "Everyone likes to get
,something for free."
To promote an awareness of their
business, Mr. Walker and Mrs. Carter, also
distributed 1,000 coupons for a free ice
cream cone, to students of the elementary
schools in the Walton, Seaforth and Brussels
area. Those coupons are redeemable any
time. As well, they are running a promotion
!which will provide a free Coke to the first 100

my town has done for me'
I think that parkmg is sometunes a pro-
blem.Maybe I'll ask my parents to go to the
next council committee meetmg that is hell
on a monthly basis. These meetings are
open to the public, anyone can come ! Maybe
I'll sec you there. You might want to say

something about fire protection, the crack
in the sidewalk in front of your house or
about the garbage disposal. But maybe you
will come to listen to what's going on in your
town and you may show up to comment on
the fine job your town is doing!
My, how time flies it is already summer.
I'm sitting in a lawnchair, outside my house.
And to my surprise, there are two big black
doge, sniffing our garbage and acting like
they have rabies' And boy an I scared of
dogs' So 1 run into the house to call the
animal control They come and take away
the dogs
Before I know it. it is already fall The
leaves are falling off trees, onto the roads. 1t
looks really messy I So the council decides to
call the people that maintain our roads. And
once again our town looks nice
So the next time you walk down the streets
of Seaforth, think of and appreciate, all the
things your local government has done for
you

THEY REALLY HELP US!
What does our Municipal Governments do
for us' This is a question asked by many
children I think that we children should
learn and know about what the government
is doing First of all you need to know what
the Municipal Government is. They are peo-
ple who arc chosen or elected by your
parents to represent your community or
town. They decide what to do with problems
like pollution, getting money to pave streets,
building police and fire stations and other
things in your life
At your school there probably is a
Students' Council. This council looks at pro-
blems in the school and raises money for
school things like class trips, movies and
also playground equipment. They organize
school yard clean-ups•too.
What does a school council have to do with
Municipal Governments? Well they do the
same thing but deal with different issues
that concern the whole community. When
you compare something you know to
something you don't know, it makes it easier
to understand.
The Municipal Government will help start
groups to go around town and pick up gar-
bage. Also the group will research ways to
stop pollution like smog. acid rain in our
local ponds and ways to keep waste disposal
down

The council is in charge of paving roads
and sidewalks and keeping them clean.
They will plant trees and plants to make the
town look fresh and outdoorish.
They provide police and fire stations that
protect us from fire, smoke, speeding
drivers, thieves, drunken drivers and other
people that break the law. They keep you
safe from wild animals and they keep noise
down so you can live in peace and quiet.
People have rules to follow and the
Municipal Government is sure they abide by
them.
One rule is, that people wanting to build a
house, have to have a certain amount of
space in front and behind the building they
own. If they want less space, so they can
have a larger home, they ask the council.
The council will then decide.
The Municipal Government is very impor-
tant to our lives and do many things for us.
Hey, let's face it! The governments do a lot
for us, that we take for granted, Let's be
sure we appreciate and thank them ton!
They are very important!
Let's hear it for the Municipal
Governments!

WHAT DOES
THE MUNICIPAL GOVERNMENT
DO FOR US!
Can you imagine Seaforth without a
Municipal Government? Most of us take it
for granted and are not even aware of all
these wonderful services provided by them.
The Municipal Government cares for the
Seaforth people by keeping the roads and
streets safe and well protected. They help
keep hospitals for sick people, good beds to
sleep on, chairs, tables, and sofas for the
sick.
Providing us with snow removal in the
winter months and year round garbage
pick-up helps make it a lot easier. Road
repairs are done all year round.
Other services provided are electricity,
water and sewage. The municipality is
responsible for the police force and, town fire
department. Although the firemen are
volunteers, the municipal government our-
chases all equipment including firetrucks.
Don't think of the Municipal Government
as something not important: Let us all work
together.
