consistent member of Hnron church, a

the person of Sarah Dowson, relict of

The death of Catharine Sarr, beloved
wife of Mr. Jae Jewett, at the family
home en Havelock Street, Lncknow, on
Wednesday evening last, April 10th,
came as a severe shook to her family
and friends, Deceased. who was iu her
30th year, had been ill for some time,
but bright hopes were entertained for
her recovery. She leaves to mot.rn her

A quiet wedding was solemnized in
the Lutheran church, Mildmay,on Tues-
day afternoon of last week, when Miss
Emma, third daughter of Mr William
Borth of the 4th concession of Garrick,
was united in wedlock to Mr Norman
Schmermund of Elmira. The nuptial
knot was tied by Rev. Mr. Mosig, pastor
of the church. Mr and Mrs Sohmer-
mund will shortly take np residence
near Elmira.

The death is recorded of Mary Ann
Gibson, daughter of the late Capt Samu-
el Gibson, of Goderich, whioh occurred
at St, Louis, Mo., on Easter Day, March
31st. The deceased was born in Scot-

and lived with her father on his farm in
Usborne township, Of late years she
had been living with her brother, G G.
Gibson, at St. Louis, and had been ex-
pecting to visit her old friends in Us -
borne during the coming summer. In
January she had an attack of influenza,
from which she never recovered.

After an illness of several months,
Donald Boyd, of Goderich, passed to the
unseen world, Wednesday morning,
April 17th, the family having been sum-
moned a few days previous in exopecta-
tion of the end of a useful life. Mr.
Boyd was a native of Scotland, being
born in Invernesshire nearly sixty.fonr
years ago. He came to this cbuntry in
youth with his parents, tke family liv-
ing for some time at Brantford, and
afterwards for a while in Goderich,
where Mr. Boyd attended school. His
father had taken up land in Ashfield,
but died suddenly in Brantford before
going there to occupy it, The widow
and children, however, went up and
took possession of the land, being among

the very first settlers in the n
part of Aehfleld, whioh was then cover-
ed with Well. Some years after Donald
Boyd went into partnership with James
L. Grant, now of the cnstomS office in
Goderich, in the sawmilling business,
; in which he continued for fourteen
years. Ito then went back to'farming,
in whioh he Was engaged until his re.
!moved to Goderioh between two Slid
three y'ettrr ago.
The Zurich Herald relates a most dis-
honest transaction and says (although
the first seller may have been honest in
trying to preserve the hide) : A merchant
in this village, who takes raw hides in
exohange for his goods, recently took
one in, which was rather a surprise to
him. He weighed it and allowed the
farmer 40 pounds, deducting four pounds
for waste, The merchant sold it to the
tanner, and the latter opened it up be-
fore buyi ig, when it was found that
nine pounds of salt had been put in.
Naturally the merchant was the loser.

Mr. Philip James Halls died on Mon-
day, Apri115th,after a patient and plucky
fight for four years against the inroads
of an insidious'disease. He was born
near Loudon sixty years ago, but his life
was principally spent in Exeter and
Brussels where he carried on business as
a contractor. It was in Brussels that he
was married to Miss Louella Peters,
daughter of the late Dr. Peters of that
plane, and sister of Mrs. Mulholland of
Holmesville. About twenty-five years
ago Mr. Halls located in Chicago from
whioh he did not return until three
months ago when he took np his abode
with Mr. and Mrs. Mulholland at Holm.
