HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Huron Expositor, 1989-03-08, Page 9THE HURON -PERTH High School Bonspiel was held in Seaforth on Thursday, and .the local SDHS mens team, the Huron County Champions, earned a spot in the Western Ontario Secondary School Association (WOSSA) championships by placing second in the tournament. The local team, consisting of Andy Ball (seen here), Pete Ste. Marie, Brad Milison and Paul Dolmage, beat Palmerston handily twice, but lost to Listowel 8-7 in an extra end. THE HURON EXPOSITOR, MARCH 8, 1989 — 9A Jr. Farmers shut out 5-0 MENS BROOMBALL WINTHROP 5-ROYALSO Jim McDonald did one better than a hat track in this game against the Royals. Dave Lionhardt, Ross IVfltchell and Bill Shortreed assisted. Sneaking in a lone goal was Fred McClure. The Royals seemed to be all over the ice but could not place the ball into the net. PARR LINE 1- RIVER RATS 0 A mild and meek shot by Paul Gibbings proved you don't have to have a power shot to put the ball into the net. His helpers were Craig Piet and Ed Se/verde. The Rats' en- durance was there but no goal scoring appeared. KNIGHTS 2 - EASY RIDERS 3 The first goal came from Joe Dorssers but defensive Jeff Allan proved he could score too, with help from Rob McGregor. Knights' Joe Vink found an open corner and scored unassisted. Not far behind was Steve Hulshof who wound up and deposited the ball into the net to tie the game up. With two minutes played in sudden death overtime John Aicknell chopped the ball at the red line and made it fly through the air and into the net. DUMPERS 4 - GRADS 2 With five seconds played in the game Mike Vandenhevel reached out and tipped the ball in the open net. A little help came from Ray Filson. An elaborate shot by Tony Vandenhevel was unassisted. Dumpers Dale Kennedy got a goal with John Deveraux by his side. Murray Houston evaded all players and scored on a pass from Dennis Murray. Deicing the goalie, Bill Dale got credit for a goal. He was assisted by Frank Verberne and Frank Fisheyes Brett Finlayson blasted a shot two feet from the net to score the Dumpers' fourth goal. RAIDERS 3 -RED RUSTLERS 2 A fiery goal by Mike Becker came about from a pass from Mark Ryan. Steve Faulds also scored, assisted by Marlin VanRaay and Lloyd R. Diehl Hero Bob Jansen started the Raiders on the scoreboard, thanking Tony Arts for the pass. Two goals in one night, I hope Jeff manages to get his helmet off. Assists came from Bob Jansen. LADIES BROOMBALL COMMERCIAL 5-JR.FARMER O Heather Mcllwraith's expectation was to score a goal. Well, she achieved her goal and added an assist. Tammy Nash directed the ball into the open corner of the net twice with help from Darlene Rolph. Audrey Schenk scored another goal and the fifth goal was credited to a mysterious number 10. WINTEIROP 1- QUEENS 0 Donna Arts got a break as she acknowledged a follow through shot directly on net after two minutes of overtime in this game between Winthrop and the Queens. Queens ladies got beat out on their goal when the buzzer sounded before it made its way into the net. In Ladies Broomball on March.8 at 8 p.m. Parr Line vs Winthrop and at 8:50 p.m. Commercial vs Perth. In Mens Broomball on March 9 at 7:30 p.m. Raiders vs Winthrop; at 8:20 p.m. Parr Line vs Red Rustlers; and at 9:10 p.m. Royals vs River Rats. Cardinals one point behind Falcons BY GEORGE LOVE The Cardinals have put on a late surge and have moved to withing one poigt of the league leading Falcons in the St. James Bowling League after action on Monday, February 27. There is one more week of league play and as fate would have it, the Cardinals play against the Falcons in a sud- den death match with the winners capturing the League Championship. The Cardinals showed no mercy to the Hawks, winning 7-0. Top bowlers were Cathy Broome 279, 218, 256-753; Sandy Broadfoot 297, 273-749; Todd Caldwell 261, 224-683; Albert Boven 262-598. Dan Ben- newies led the Hawks with 267, 278-732; Kevan Broome 247-615; Pat Ryan 197-526; Joanne Albin 226-513. Meanwhile, the Orioles stopped the Falcons 5-2, to put their championship aspirations on hold for one more week. Harry Den Haan was the leader for the Seaforth Novice win Clinton playoff series The Novice hockey team began their se- cond round of playoffs on Tuesday, February 28 in Seaforth. The Clinton team beat out Mitchell so they were the new opposition. Clinton came out ready to work and at the end of the first period the score was Clinton 2 Seaforth 0. During the second and third periods Seaforth came to life as Mark Van Dooren put away four goals in a row. Assists went to Scott Van Dooren (2), Rob Craig and Scott Henderson. With four minutes left in the game, Clinton scored again. The final score was Seaforth 4 Clinton 3. The goalie for this game was Josh Dietz. The second game of the best of five series was in Clinton on Thursday night, March 2 with Charles Robertson in goal. Clinton came out flying and scored two unanswered goals in the first minute and 10 seconds. Seaforth had to come from behind again! Scott Van Dooren took a pass from Jered Munro and shot it high into the net. Then Pat Coyne put in a backhand shot from Jeremey McNichol to tie the game. Rob Craig picked up a rebound and popped it in the net to give Seaforth a 3-2 lead at the end of the first period. The scoring was even in the second period. Mark Van Dooren put a hard shot over the goalie's right shoulder and Clinton also scored one. The third period belonged to Seaforth with Mark Van Dooren scoring two identical goals. Each time he held onto the puck till the goalie made a move and then shot in the backhand. Scott Henderson assisted on one. The final score was Seaforth 6 Clinton 3. Because Clinton won the flap, the third game was also in Clinton on Saturday, March 4 with Charles Robertson in goal again. Once again Clinton took the lead ear- ly in the first period but this time Seaforth was determined to play their best. Josh Dietz assisted by Scott Van Dooren, tied the game at 1-1. Then Brandon Nash made a beautiful pass to Michael Mullin in front of the net and he shot it in. Scott Van Tie 'at Better Butter bonspiel In three events, over three games, after winners could display their prize with pride. all the points were counted, organizers of Organizers Judy and Brian Hall, Sandy the third annual Gay Lea Better Butter and Bob Hayward, Mary and Lloyd Bonspiel, hosted by the Vanastra Curling Hayward provided a prize table utilizing Club, was declared a tie. Belles hot on a winning streak On Sunday, March 5 the Seaforth Belles played Exeter on home ice. All the girls were in pretty good shape and fans were numerous. The game was fast and action packed and. both teams were even tbfioughout the first period. Scoring Seaforth's first goal of the night was number 24 Jen Watt assisted by winger Lori Dewy's. Exeter tried very bard to score but with excellent goaltending by Shelly O'Brien and hard working defencemen, they were unsuccessful. The first period ended with Sheri Kling receiving a pass from Amy Vanden Akker and making a great move around Exeter's defencemen and into the net. Jane was in the spotlight again as she scored the last goal of the game assisted by Sheri Kling and Shelly Nigh. Final score 5-1. All the girls played well and the defencemen did well in keeping the ring out of Seaforth's end. "Keep it up girls". WOAA INTERMEDIATE HOCKEY PLAYOFFS Dooren passed to brother Mark who held on- to the puck until the goalie went down and then slipped it in on the right side. Pat Coyne picked up his own rebound and shot it in. The assist went to Ben Murray. At the end of the first period the score was Seaforth 4 Clinton 1. During the second period Seaforth scored twice. -Brandon Nash, 'assisted ' by 'Derek Smith and Mike Mullin, put the puck right between the goalie's legs. Mark Van Dooren, assisted by Rob Craig, slipped the puck in around the corner of the net. Clinton scored midway through the third period and then Seaforth finished off the scoring when Josh Dietz made bt_iuti' } backhand shot out of the cornet to Mark Van Dooren in front and he put it away. The final score was Seaforth 8 Clinton 2. The Novice team bas put Clinton out in three games straight. They now wait for the next round to begin. Good luck on your next series guys! Top howlers for the day were determined by most pins over their average and the final standings showed 17 bowlers having a plus score after five games. High scores for the ladies were Sandra Campbell plus 134; Cathy Broome plus 119; Joyce Mareuccio plus 117; Marilyn Den Haan plus 43; Bert Kloss plus 38, and Sue Stokes plus 13.
