Ryan celebrated his 79th birth- day on Monday, February 27. at Hillside Nursing Home, Sebringville. Entertainment was provided by Jolene Cronin who sang a number of songs that were enjoyed by everyone. The evening ended with birthday cake and ice cream. Those attending the birthday party were his wife Rita Ryan of St. Columban, Louis and Catherine Masse and Marylou of Zurich; Jim and Mildred Cronin and Barry and friend of St. Columban; Bob and Joan Cronin, Tammy, Jolene, Darryl, Danny and Evan of Dublin and Lorrie Cronin, Angie, Jeff, Katie and Greg of Mitchell, Don and Theresa Cronin, Kelly and Dianne of RR 1 Dublin visited with Joe Ryan on Monday afternoon. • Joe Ryan is a patient of Stratford General Hospital and the continuality wishes him a good recovery to health. Jim and Mildred Cronin along with Col- leen, Jackie, Bob and Lorrie, Angie, Jeff, Katie and Greg, Diane Woods and girls all attended the Ice Capades in Kitchener on Saturday morning. Lisa Melady, daughter of Tom and Joanne Melady celebrated her first birthday on Fri- day, March 3. With Lisa and her parents to celebrate her birthday were John and Lenie Roks of Deleware, Annette Roks, Red and Frances Melady, Patsy Ryan of Thamesford, • Carolyn Miland of Mitchell, Wayne and Anne Chapin, William and Vanessa of Brad- ford, Jim Melady and Brian Melady. Family and neighbors of Gerry and Karen Ryan attended a surprise birthday party for Karen Ryan on Saturday evening at her home, hosted by Gerry. Some of the guests enjoyed a few games of euchre while others had a ball playing the game "Pictionary". A delicious buffet lunch was enjoyed by all. Happy Birthday was sung and Karen blew out the candles on the birthday cake, made and decorated by Marg MacRae, and passed the cake out to the guests. EUCHRE GAME in spite of the inclement weather on Fri- day evening, six tables were in play for the Knights of Columbus euchre game. The winners were: lady high was Mamie Delaney; men's high was Ken Coyne, most lone hands, Jerry Murray and the door prize went to Jerome Murray. The next game will be Friday, March 10 in the K. of C. hall in St. Columban. 4H NEWS The third meeting of the McKillp IV 441 Club on "Working With Wool' was held on March 2 at the home of Bep Klaver. The meeting opened with the 441 Pledge and then the members showed what they are making for their knitting project. They showed the progress they are making on their second sample and divided into groups to continue working on them. Next week the club is going on a trip to Liz Yeates near Mitchell to learn more about wool. The meeting was then adjourned. Benefit dance held for fire victims Dublin Correspondent MRS. McLeod's house where they were shown woven rugs, nature dyed wool and a spinn- ing wheel. The girls tried their hands at car- ding wood and weaving on a 45 inch loom. This proved to be a little more difficult than it looked. We would like to extend a very hearty thank you to Mrs. McLeod for her time. It was greatly appreciated. Mrs. Eileen MacRae is a patient in St. Joseph's Hospital, London. y cf•lyding wool After a short ride home and after everyone had warmed up a little, Kate Pap- ple called the meeting to order. The 4-H pledge was recited and Tammy Janmaat read the minutes of last week's meeting. With the remaining time the young knit- ters were shown how to properly "block" a sweater and worked on the projects started last week. In the senior divi- sion, Sharon Kelly, left, of St. Patrick's School in Dublin, was awarded first prize for her speech on 'Being Cool'. Second place went to Kim Boersen of St. Patrick's Kinkora for her speech on 'Senior Citizens' and third went to Anne Marie Huitema, also of Kinkora. The top two finishers will now advance to the OECTA competition slated to be held later this month. In the junior division the top three winners were; Matthew Schurter of St. Marys, Hesson; Carol Ann Koert of St. Patrick's, Kinkora, and Laurie Nicholson, also of St. Patrick's, Kinkora. JOHN TEMPLEMAN 345-2346 Gladys Kirk and her daughter Wilma Bell, Herniate, Manitoba, visited this past week with John and Marjorie Drake, Staffa. While here they also visited with Mr. and Mrs. Filmer Chappel, Cromarty and Mr. and Mrs. Cal Horten and Mabel Gilfillan Exeter. Doug and Nancy Baster, Mitchell visited on Saturday evening with Mike and Mary Jane Parsons and family. Rob, Bev, Carrah, Cain and Cohen Templeman visited on the weekend with Carol Stewart, Kitchener. A good crowd was in attendance when the Cromarty Scouts, Cubs and Beavers held their annual church service on Sunday mor- ning at the Hibbert United Church. Bill and Mary Rowcliffe, Hensall visited Sunday evening with Doris Miller. WOMEN'S INSTITUTE Joyce Vivian hosted the Agricultural meeting of the Staffa Women's Institute at her home in Mitchell on Wednesday after- noon, when JoAnne Wilhelm was guest speaker. Ms. Wilhelm told about her day as Minister of Agriculture at Toronto and giv- ing her speech on animal welfare groups and rights which she had given at the Royal Winter Fair last November. JoAnne was in- troduced and thanked by Joyce Vivian. Lillian Douglas presided for the meeting Twelve members answered the roll call by naming something that was produced on the farm to market stage that is now purchased in a grocery store and also naming the Minister of Agriculture the year you were born. Lillian Douglas conducted a quiz on Agrio Foods and Joyce Vivian conducted a quiz on Animal Byproducts. A discussion was held on 441 and a contribution to it. Verle Mahon gave a "Wee Smile". Reberta Templeman conducted the business with minutes and "thank yous" read by Verle Mahon. Staffa Women's In- stitute will be hosting the Perth South District Annual this year at Main Street United Church, Mitchell on Tuesday May 16, 1989. Donations were made to Telecare and to the Music Festival. It was decided to set up at display at the Mitchell Fair, the theme this year is "Home for Thanksgiving" and a committee was named. The March meeting was received and the meeting closed with lunch served by the hostess Joyce and Hazel Harburn.
