Seaforth Optimists ready themselves for canoe races
The Seaforth Optimists now have tickets
available for their fourth Travel the World
draw. Anyone wishing a ticket should con-
tact a member or visit Bob's Barber Shop.
Only 350 tickets are sold and the early bird
draw is March 19, and the first trip is drawn
in April. ,
The last dinner meeting saw plenty of
guests as the new Optimist Queen Leanne
Whitmore and her princess Tracy Salverda
were present. They honored the club with
the speeches that were part of their re-
quirements in being selected.
Also present were Mr. and Mrs. Ross
Ribey who were guests in honor of the work
and effort they put into organizing and runn-
ing the Lions Santa Claus parade.
Along with the Ribeys were the winners of
The BIA, Optimist Christmas Decoration
Contest. They were presented with prizes
for their efforts in making Seaforth a better
community.
First place winners were Mr. and Mrs. T.
Kale, second place Mr. and Mrs. Cusack and
third place Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hulley.
Congratulations again to all the winners
and good luck for next year.
The Lt. Governor for Zone 16 Michigan
was also present in Mr. and Mrs. Larry Wat-
son along with their two boys. Larry is also a
past president of the West Branch Optimist
Club and was here to arrange a student ex-
change between local high school students
and their counterparts from West Branch.
This will be a program to enhance the West
Branch games and hopefully will be con-
tinued and eventually expanded to include
other groups and organizations.
Tickets are available now for the canoe to
be drawn at the race April 2. Plans are also
being made to have a food booth available
and at the bridge for spectators and those
taking part.
Members are reminded that the meeting
for March 16 has been cancelled and a
special meeting for St. Patrick's. Day,
March 17, is planned.
Develoment grant aw.rded t• :on -profit housi{ ,g gro
Belgrave Non -Profit Housing Corporation
has been awarded a $1,000 development
grant from the Province of Ontario.
Jack Riddell, Minister of Agriculture and
Food and MPP for Huron, said the grant will
be used to help offset the costs:of incor-
porating a non-profit housing organization
and preparing an initial submission to the
government under a federal -provincial non-
profit housing program.
Grants are available to groups developing
government -assisted non-profit housing for
the first time.
"I am very pleased that Belgrave Non -
Profit' Housing Corporation plans to take
part in the non-profit housing program, and
I'm hopeful that the proposed project will
greatly benefit senior citizens in the
Township of East Wawanosh," Mr. Riddell
said.
• The Government of Canada and the Pro-
vince of Ontario will cost -share assistance
directed to needy households through the
non-profit housing program. Market rental
units will be.fully funded by the Province of
Ontario.
The program, administered by the On-
tario Ministry of Housing, permits
municipal non-profit, private non-profit and
co-operative non-profit groups to build ren-
tal housing for people with low -to -moderate
incomes.
The projects will contain rent -geared -to -
income housing, in which tenants pay rent
based solely on income rather than on type
or size of accommodation. Some projects
p
may include a number of market rental
units.
The exact mix of income groups to be ac-
commodated in projects will be determined
by individual project sponsors and will be
based on the particular needs of the local
community.
Those eligible for rent -geared -to -income
housing include families, senior citizens,
childless couples, single persons and
physically, developmentally and
psychiatrically -handicapped people capable
of independent living.
Funding is also available for non-profit
and co-operative projects for low-income
singles and for people requiring some form
of support care or help with the normal func-
tions of day-to-day living.

"It's an ideal opportunity for any family
to learn about another part of the world,"
explains Jim Murray, an active Interculture
Canada volunteer in Seaforth. Mr. Murray
and his family recently hosted a student
from Japan.
"It's also a very rewarding human ex-
perience. All you need is an open, generous
and understanding outlook to help make the
student feel like a member of the family all
sorb any outstanding expenses for the stu-
dent other than the housing, food and in-

schools.
