Consultants save time and
Planning a wedding can be a big pro-
ject for even the most organized couple.
If you want the wedding without the
worries, you can get a consultant to help
you plan everything from invitations to
honeymoon. There are two such com-
panies now operating in the London area.
Booking sites for the reception and
ceremony and arranging for clergy, in-
vitations, music, flowers, formal wear,
food and.drink, speeches and receiving
line are among the services offered.
"It best benefits someone who is work-
ing and is a very busy person," says
Marg Hough of Regal Bridal Consultants
in London. "They know what they want
for their wedding, but they really, don't
have the time to make the phone calls, to
do the running around, to check this, that
and the other. And that's where we come
in.'
She says many young couples know
what kind of wedding they wantbut still
need a bit of guidance. Interfaith mar-
riages or weddings where one of the
newlyweds is from out of town might also
benefit from a consultant.
"There are so many areas to be
covered. Even if they are very organized
people, unless they are knowledgeable
about all the businesses available in Lon-
don, it's still going to take them a while
to put it together themselves."
A wedding consultant can also alert
you to the possibilities, says Marian
Coyle of Wedding Ways in Ingersoll. You
might want to go to the church by horse
and buggy or write your own vows, but
you don't know how to go about doing it.
Coyle says a consultant can fill you in on
these options as well as recommending
caterers, florists, musicians, and
worries or wale
photographers.
"A lot of people are not aware that
there are so many different kinds of wed-
dings," she says. "But you can put two
different types of weddings together quite
nicely. A lot of girls want traditional
things and yet maybe they'll want
something ethnic in it. Or they'll want to
be a little more formal at the church and
then go very partyish at the reception."
The toughest part of a wedding is stick-
ing to the budget, says Hough. "I strong-
ly recommend setting a budget," she
says. "If you're paying $1,000 more•than
you wanted to, you're not going to be
happy about it when you get home from
the honeymoon and have to pay the
bills." Once a budget is set, a consultant
can help you to stick to it.
The cost of a consultant varies. Hough
says she keeps a detailed time log of all

calls, errands and services done for the
couple, and adds up the time at the end.
A consultant can be hired for a one-hour
consultation to help in one area, or from
start to finish, for small or large wed-
dings of any faith or no faith. She
charges by the hour, and "I can get an
awful lot done in an hour." She would on-
ly say her fee is "under $20 an hour."
Coyle says her fees vary depending on
what she does, and her bill can range
from $35 for help in a particular area, up
to $1,000 if it is a big wedding in which
she has been involved from start to
finish.
Weddings can cause tension between
the couple and their families, Coyle says.
"Everybody has their own ideas for a
wedding. The mother has her ideas, the
daughter may want something different,
and her fiance may not want what they
want at all." She says a consultant helps
people to compromise and to keep the
lines of communication open.
Other difficulties can arise if couples
continue to change their minds about the
ceremony, reception site, menu, or other
important details of the wedding.
"Anything they want can be done,"
Hough says, "But the more they change
their minds, the more time is involved to
go out and pursue this other area, and
confusion and disappointment can set it."
Time and energy can be saved by get-
ting a consultant who will make the calls,
check out the sites and give price
estimates, says Hough.
Another possibility is to hire the consul-
tant just for the week before the wedding
and the day itself. "The last week before
the wedding can be extremely hectic,"
she says. "But there's no reason for
brides to be tired and frustrated and ex-
hausted;" (London Free Press
