One often -imagines the good money
manageras a hyperactive type who races
fromstore to store to comparison shop,
and who consults everyexpert and author
in the .business before making a purchase.
in real.life, few people have the time to
be a Super Consumer. And, in weighing the
cost of a purchase, your own time and
energy, not to mention gas and car
depreciation, should also be considered.
A few.tips
The following pointers can help you
make well -considered purchases even if
you haven't time to shop around:
*Read the newspapers. Advertisements
not only fill space, they provide valuable
information. Even if you are not in the
market for a specific item, you gain a good
sense of price range and sources of supply
be regularly scanning the ads.
•If you see a good sale and decide to go,
bring the newspaper advertisement along
to verify prices. Should the item you want
be already sold out, ask the merchant for LI
ram check and take his business card
Unless the ad specifically says the number
of items on sale is limited. the merchant
should provide you the same item at salt
price within a reasonable time. Stay in
touch with the merchant and when the
item is available, either arrange to pick n
up at a specific tune or have it delivered.
Save yourself the most time and aggrava•
tion you can.
-Use your Yellow Pages and telephone.
Even big stores have switchboards that
will generally connect you with individual
departments. 'You can find out in two
minutes if the merchandise is worth a trip
to the store. Someti1' es you can order
things delivered directly over the phone
Make careful
appliance
choices
Many couples. excited at the prospect
of planning their wedding, forget that the
items they list on their department store
bridal gift registry have an impact that
can last many years after the wedding.
How? Often couples are extremely
busy, arranging receptions and picking
music for .the ceremony, choosing china
patterns and deckling on colors for the
bathroom ... so busy that choosing items
for everyday use falls by the wayside.
Worse yet, the items are chosen with no
thought given.to their usefulness.
QUESTIONS TO CONSIDER
Choosing small electrical appliances
for a new household can be easy. Here
are several questions for couples to con-
sider before choosing the right.ap-
pliances for their lifestyle.
Spending just a little lime discussing
them could make life after the wedding
much easier.
• Will we be eating together, or will we
both be so busy that eat and run will be
more our style?
• Do we prefer to eat out, or eat deli
food, or home -cooked meals? 1t is impor-
tant for both bride and groom to know
one another's food likes and dislikes.
• Who will do the cooking? Simple as it
seems, many couples do not discuss this
important issue. If one spouse will do the
majority of the cooking, that person
should get the majority vote on the ap-
pliances chosen.

•If you are planning a purchase, discuss
the project with friends. You can profit
from other people's leg -work.
•Use mail-order catalogues, a Canadian
tradition for over a century. This is now a
booming business, and for good reasons as
it can save hours of schlepping through
stores and prices are often competitive.
The major disadvantage is that the item
may be late in arriving, damaged, or un -

wisely on a tight budget
suitable. A good mail order house
graciously accepts returns, but this doe's
involve a trip to the post office for you.
Combine several shopping trips into one,
and decide before you go what you are go-
ing to buy. Pick up birthday and holiday
gifts on sale when convenient throughout
the year, instead of waiting until the last
minute.
•Shop alone. Pressure from companions
may cause you to make an ill-considered
decision, and chit-chat can slow you down
•If you want to comparison shop, pick
two stores in close proximity and frequent
them so you know the merchandise. You
may miss Dollar Day at a shop on the
other side of town, but you will recognize
true specials and sales at your preferred
stores and will probably come out even in
the long run.
