N7A 4B 524-2614 BRTDES'89: .e) Diamond shopping can be confusing 1 One Valentine story tells that Cupid's arrows were tipped with diamonds — each guaranteed to ignite flaming pas- sion in a loved one's heart. The mystical, infinitely enduring qualities of the dia- mond make it the most romantic of Valentines. But, buying a diamond can be a confusing process. David C. Anstett of Anstett Jewelers in • Clinton recommends carefully reviewing the following factors when purchasing a diamond. . Carat weight is the standard measure- ment of diamond size but may be the least important variable when it comes to a diamond's brilliance and quality. " Color refers to the color seen in the body of the stone, ranging from colorless to yellowish. ' Clarity refers to the degree to which tiny natural marks, called inclusions, are present in a diamond. ' Cut is the most important of the "4C's" — and often the least understood. Many people confuse cut with shape. Shape refers to the geometric form of the stone (round, oval and marquise are three ex- amples ). Cut actually refers to the skill and care taken in the arrangement of a diamond's facets. When it comes from the ground, an un- cut diamond looks like a translucent peb- ble. It takes the skill of a master dia- mond cutter to release the hidden fire. But Anstett says the stone must be cut with mathematical precision. "Just like "flawless" is the best clarity in a diamond, there is a standard of perfection called the "ideal cut;" he said. When the proportions are ideal. light entering the diamond reflects and refracts inside creating the optimum balance of brilliance, -sparkle and fire. "If the stone is cut too shallow, part of the light leaks out the bottom. If the stone is cut too deep, much of the light leaks out tfie sides. "To ensure that your diamond has the maximum play of light, ask for any ideal cut." You can feel more confident about your diamond if it has been laser -inscribed. Serge Boro, • diamond expert with Lazare Diamonds (a diamond cutting company sperializing in the ideal cut), says the tiny inscription on Lazare Diamonds is invisible to the naked eye. "We put a tiny logo and identification number on the circumference of the dia- mond," Boro said. "The laser inscription serves as the consumer's proof of ownership in case it's ever lost or stolen. "The logo is a reassuring proof of the diamond's top quality ideal cut. The Lazare Diamond inscription is only visi- ble under 10 -power magnification and does not affect the beauty of the diamond in any way." While diamonds unsurpassed beauty and rarity make them precious and valuable, they are available in a broad range of sizes, colors and clarifies to fit every budget.
