centre of your home
Homeowners have long known what
designers and architects have only
recently discovered; the kitchen is the
centre of the home, a warm place to
nourish and replenish both physical and
spiritual needs.
Parties gravitate there; guests wind up
leaning against the counter; kids, dogs
and adults gather around the table to
catch up on the day's events.
With today's vast array of furniture,
appliances and cupboard/counter top ar-
rangements — and with the generous
space supplied by today's homebuilders —
the kitchen can be the. warm and welcom-
mg place of your dreams, where food
preparation is only one of the usual
activities.
Kitchen furnishings fall into the same
three general groupings as those in the
living room — traditional, country or
contemporary.
A contemporary kitchen might feature
stainless steel and European open shelv-
ing with a purely '80s granite counter top.
The look is perfectly complemented by a
glass -topped table and tubular aluminum
chairs. The '50s look of skinny little vgire-
legged chairs is also making a big com-
eback. Another possibility is the oval
marble -topped table with classic black -
bistro chairs.
Contemporary is also a good choice for
a kitchen that must serve other uses such
as an office. Canadian manufacturers of-
fer a variety of dual-purpose furniture
that can fit right in. There's a table that
masquerades as a desk and there's even
a set that virtually disappears when not
in use, folded up against a wall with the
chairs concealed inside the folded table.
Traditional is a term furniture people
use to cover anything prior to 1945 and
a traditional kitchen can cover a lot of
bases.
Painted wooden cabinets, perhaps with
bevelled glass doors, can accompany the
centrepiece — a polished cherry table
with wicker armchairs. A home office is
perfect for a corner here, complete with
shelves and perhaps a reproduction
Georgian desk. In space conscious kit-
chens, the newly repopularized drop-leaf
table is a handy alternative. It can be
folded down when only one or two people
are dining or unfolded when the kitchen
draws a crowd. And, if you have the
space, you might even consider a small
sofa or loveseat in which to curl up with
a cookbook or where friends can relax
while the cook creates the culinary
masterpiece.
Perhaps most popular, though, is the
country kitchen. Warm, bright and sun-
ny, it evokes memories of Grandma's
wood stove.
Contemporary, country or traditional,
home is where the heart is — and in the
'80s more than in any recent time, the
kitchen is still the heart of the home.
