Keep it eleg
For the men in today's wedding party,
Leonard Goldstein has some simple,
unadorned advice:
"Keep it elegant, keep it comfortable,
keep it simple and for goodness sake,
have fun."
And Goldstein ought to know. He
makes the fashion decisions tor Canada's
leading foranalwear company, Freeman
Formalwear of Toronto.
"You can't look good unless you feel
good," says Goldstein, who has spent
much of his adult life hauling the tuxedo
into the fashion mainstream.
"Men don't wear out-of-date business
suits. Why should they be expected to feel
comfortable and elegant in an out-of-style
tuxedo?
"Formalwear is not an isolated fashion
segment in its own hermetically sealed
space," says Goldstein.
"It's part of the evolution of men's
style. And today that means high-spirited
elegance coupled with a respect for the
classics."
Here's what to look for in 1989:
Vests are back with a bang! The new
vest, in corded satin, is elegant and com-
fortable with a long shawl lapel.
The most popular vest colours are:
e Black — the corded satin matches the
latest tuxedo lapels;
e White and ivory — designed to comple-
ment the bridal gown;
a Red — "It's a rich, joyful colour which
adds a dashing touch," says Goldstein.

The new silhouettes are contemporary
— emphasizing chest and shoulders with
less ascent in the waist and hips.
Trousers are more full and pleated.
"They look good and they're a lot more
comfortable," says Goldstein. "It's a
very masculine look."
Black is back but it's far from basic.
Soft, comfortable, natural fabrics have
textural interest with subtle stripes, cor-
ding or herringbone patterns.
Many of the new lapels are finished in
corded satin, a fabric which "adds in-
terest and complements the classic look.
"Double-breasted has always been
popular in formalwear and even more
people are wearing them today," says
Goldstein.
Freeman designers have taken a uni-
que approach to the double breasted tux-
edo. They recognized that comfort was a
priority and so was the need to show
accessories.
The result is that the new jackets have
a much smaller overlap so they are com-
fortable even when buttoned. This means
that men can show off vests or
cummerbunds.
A popular variation is the single -button,
double-breasted dinner jacket in black or
white with a long shawl lapel.
