The Huron Expositor, 1989-02-15, Page 11Cattlemen prepare for beef Votes Ontario beef producers will have an op- portunity to vote on two questions on the future of the marketing system tor their in- dustry April 14,1989. The vote, which will be conductedbymaii- in ballot, comes as the result of a recom- mendation :made by the Ontario Beef Marketing Task Force. - 1. Are you in favor of'the pro9osed producer - controlled marketing commission which would regulate the sale of all beef cattle in Ontario? 2. Are you in favor off the above proposed producer -controlled marketing commission working .towards a national beef cattle marketing plan with the authority to manage supply and determine price? The questions were developed by the con- sensus of a vote committee representing the Ontario Cattlemen's Association, Beef Pro- ducers for Change Inc., and the Ontario Ministryof Agriculture and Food. The com- mittee also prepared an information package which explains that the proposed commission would regulate the sale of all beef cattle, register all producers, and en- sure That all beef cattle for slaughter 'would be sold competitively by sales agents ap- pointed by the commission. This material will be mailed to producers with the ballot in March. All producers who produced four or more head of beef cattle for at least 45 consecutive days in 1987 or 1988 are eligible to vote ac- cording to the criteria agreed upon by the committee. Beef cattle includes all beef and dairy breeds. The vote will be conducted by the Ontario Farm Products Marketing Commission. Producers can contact their local Ontario THE HURON EXPOSITOR, f^ESRUARY 15, 1989 — 11A wait for ballots to arrive Ministry of Agriculture and Food office or the Beef Information line at 1-8004160-7386 beginning February 10 for further information. "This vote seeks the consensus of the beef cattle producers to decide their future marketing system," said ,Ont Agriculture and Food Minister Jack Riddell. "The committee has worked hard to enure that all producers have an opportunity to ad- dress this important issue. I'm pleased that the ministry could act as a facilitator in establishing the groundwork for this very important vote." The Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food is arranging a series of information meetings across Ontario in late March and early April. The meetings will take the form of a debate between representatives of the Ontario Cattlemen's Association and the Beef Producers for Change. Mr. Riddell said he encourages all pro- ducers to attend the local information meetings and send in their ballots by the April 14 deadline. "The beef cattle industry has an oppor- tunity now to provide an indication of the direction it should follow," he said. "I will accept a vote of 60 per cent on question one as a signal that producers want to alter their marketing system." The 16 -member Beef Marketing Task Force, which completed its report earlier this winter, comprised representatives of a cross-section of the industry including pro- ducers, feedlot operators, auction market operators, dealers, packers and processors.
