HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Huron Expositor, 1989-01-25, Page 66A - THE HURON EXPOSITOR, JANUARY 25, 1989 THIS WEEK IN Sports acla Atoms record no Tosses, but don't advance The Seaforth Atoms travelled to Sarnia on Friday for their opener at the North American Silverstick. Some of their first opponents from Cobden, were much bigger than the Seaforth squad, which made Seaforth feel they were at a disadvantage. As a result, the Seaforth team were down two goals at the beginning of the first period. However, late in the period, Seaforth's Pat Gridzak scored a well earned goal when he picked up a precise pass from Steve Mclnally. Boyd Devereaux came back only 25 seconds later with an unassisted goal to even the score. At the 6:37 mark of the second period, Jason Murray scored assisted by Mike Hugill, to give Seaforth its first lead in the game. Seaforth managed to hold that lead with a lot of back checking until the 4:16 mark of the third, when Cobden evened the score. Seaforth couldn't get the puck past the Cobden goalie which left the game in a tied position. Seaforth played its second garne bright and early Saturday morning against Pelham. Seaforth started the scoring early in the first with a goal by Boyd Devereaux assisted by Jason Henderson. Late in the first, Seaforth strengthened its lead with a goal by Colin Devereaux, assisted by Boyd Devereaux. With only three minutes, 25 seconds of play into the second, Jason Henderson netted the puck assisted by Jason Murray, The Seaforth tans were able to relax a little thinking we had a big enough lead, but the opposition wasn't long coming back in the second period scoring two quick goals. With only five minutes, 25 seconds of play in the third, Pelham tied the score. But however, Seaforth's Boyd Devereaux assisted by Shaun Anstett scored the winn- ing goal, to end the game 4-3. Seaforth's final game,of the weekend was against Sarnia, where they had an easy vic- tory 14-2. The fans and the players were all keen for the game thinking we would still advance in the tournament. However, to everyone's disappointment a win did not ad- vance us, but the Seaforth boys are still Number One. Scoring for Seaforth the final game were Boyd Devereaux - four, Chris Marion - two, Mike Hugill - two, Steve McInally - two, and Colin Devereaux, Jason Murray, Pat Grid- zak and Jason Henderson each adding one. Earning assists were Steve Mclnally, Pat Gridzak, Jason Henderson, Shaun Anstett, Mike Hugill, Chris Marion and Jason Mur- ray. Both goalies, Chad Lamont and Scott Wood, made some • excellent saves and played well all tournament. Members of the team are Mark McNichol, Jason Smith, Mike Voch, Brent Hulley, Jason Murray, Boyd Devereaux, Jason Henderson, Pat Gridzak, Mfke Hugill, Steve Mclnally, Colin Devereaux, Shaun Anstett, Chris Marion, Chad Lamont and Scott Wood. The coach is Doug Anstett, assistants, Ray Anstett Jr. and Charles Robertson, trainer Rick Wood, manager Nancy Anstett. Congratulations on excellent playing all weekend and Good Luck in the All Ontario Championship! Congratulations to Steve Mclnally who was chosen as an All-Star defense player at the tournament. Special thanks go to Wayne and Harold Smith Construction who donated the tourna- ment entry fee and to John Watt who sharpened all the boys skates. Thanks! Seahawks edge Milverton 6-5 If the Seaforth Seahawks figured on a free two points from the fifth -place Milverton 4 -Wheel Drives Saturday night they got a bit of a surprise. The local intermediates still won 6-5 at Hensall, but they were on the ropes when the final bell sounded. Milverton scored the only two goals of the third period to erase what had been a comfortable 6-3 Seaforth lead after two periods. The Seahawks were short- staffed for the game, with only 12 skaters. The second -place Seahawks ran their ho' -ire unbeaten streak to eight gamec with the win. Wellesley remains in first place in the Western Ontario Athletic Association's southern hockey division, four points in front of the Seahawks, who they host on Friday night. Seaforth travels to Brussels for an 8:30 p.m. game Sunday against the third-place Crusaders. The Seahawks were supposed to play at Arthur this Sunday but the game was postponed until a later date if needed, because of the Super Bowl. Greg Murray continued his torrid scoring pace of late by scoring three goals and an assist for the Seahawks Saturday. He has scored 13 goals and 17 points in his last three games. Brother Dave also popped a pair, and Kevin Melady scored the other Seaforth goal. The Seahawks. scored three goals while playing shorthanded. Milverton's Matt Carter beat Derek Cooper twice to pace the 4 -Wheel Drives. Referee • Clark Pollock tagged Seaforth with seven of the 11 minor penalties called. There were no majors. McLlwain in Penguins° line-up Seaforth's Dave McLlwain was called back up to play with the National Hockey League's Pittsburgh Penguins earlier in January, and prior to sustaining an injury he was getting a regular shift. McLlwain was a regular who played 66 games at centre ice with the Penguins last season, but was sent to Muskegon at the beginning of 19/38-89. In the minors McElwain was averaging more than a point per game. He and two Muskegon teammates were called up to the Penguins in November for a limited time, but none received much NHL ice time. The three were called up again in January. One never dressed and has since been sent back to Muskegon. The other two have been., getting regular shifts and it RRSP results that speak for themselves. Today! looks like they may be in the Penguins lineup for a while. McLlwain has been switched from cen- tre to right wing, and is playing on the Penguins' second line with Dan Quinn. But in practice last Monday, before the Penguins game against the New York Islanders, McLlwain turned the wrong way in practice and wrenched a muscle in his back. The day-to-day injury doesn't look serious, but doctors ordered rest and McLlwain missed three games against the Islanders, the Jets, and the Oilers. He hopes to be back for Wednesday's game in Pittsburgh. HOOP ALL-STAR - Denise Morey . of Seaforth. and now a student at Kingston, played January 14 in the Ontario College's Athletic Association All Star Basketball game, held at .'Mohawk College in Hamilton, Morey contributed eight points to her team's effort and recorded 12 assists and three rebounds. Morey was supposed to have been in Seaforth for its Celebrity Dinner, but because of an exam conflict, will be unable to attend. Feiss photo. .ocal girl's potential realized The potential of a local ringette player has been recognized outside the Seaforth community. Tracy Fortune, 14 -year-old daughter of Rick and Bonnie Fortune of Seaforth, was one of 25 ringette players out of 170 from Chatham, Tilsonburg, Stratford, Waterloo and the surrounding area, picked for a Western Regional Triple A Select team. Players were chosen based on their perfor- mances at three try -outs. Fifteen of the 25 players, yet to be chosen, will travel with the team to the Ontario Winter Games in North Bay. Top players from the Ontario Winter Games will form a team to repre- sent the province in the Canada Winter Games in 1991. "It's quite an accomplishment for Tracy just to get down to the 25," commented Mrs. Fortune, adding it's difficult for kids in a small town to compete with city kids for positions on All-Star teams, simply because of the difference in the amount of ice time each gets. She noted, as an exam- ple, that a player from Stratford played in 59 games, plus tournaments, last year, while Tracy played in only 15. "She's done really well for the number of games she's played. She's excited and really, really happy. She wants to make the final 15," said Wt. Fortune. Marg Dale of the Seaforth Ringette Association, and Tracy's former coach, thinks her chances of being one of 15 chosen to go to North Bay are good. "I think she's got a really good chance and everyone in the whole area knows it. She has a really super shot and she has the ability to learn - she's very open to learn- ing. If she can't get something she just works at it until she does. She gets along with the players and the coaches and helps out vdth the other kids. Kids like her really make it easier to be a coach," she said. Mrs. Dale added that she, and other members f the Seaforth Ringette Associa- tion, are very proud of Tracy and are behind her 100 per cent. "It's hard living in a small town and hav- ing to drive to all these things - practices and try -outs - and not get as much support for your accomplishments as hockey does," she said. TALENT RECOGNIZED - Local ringette player, Tracy Fortune, has made the Western Ontario All-Star ringette team. Mcllwraith photo. "For years Ontario ringette has been trying to get into the winter games and it's nice to see someone from your own area make it - even to make it this far." Tracy should ow within three weeks whether or not e'll be part of the 15 -member contigen at -will represent Western Ontario in the Ontario Winter Games.
