A Seaforth bowler will soon be pitted
against the best bowlers in the province, and
possibly the best in the country.
Murray Bennewies, of RR 1 Seaforth, will
be going to Hamilton on March 22 to 25 to
compete in the Five Pin Provincial Bowling
Championship, Mr. Bennewies is the top
bowler in the Bluewater Zone this year. He
bowls once per week in Seaforth's St. James
League, and has an average of 260,
"I've found my game. I feel confident
every time I throw the ball," says Mr.
Bennewies.
Ten bowlers from the Bluewater Zone
I which includes Huron County and
municipalities from other counties I are
selected each year to go to the provincial
tournament, and for the past three years
• Mr. Bennewies has been one of them. This is
the first year he has won the zone, but last
year he was second and the year prior to
that he was seventh.
Mr, Bennewies . started hanging out in
bowline alleys when he was 10 -years -old,
Those were the days before automatic pin
setters, and he got a job setting pins. He
spent the money be earned setting pins get-
ting time on the lanes, and 20 years later he
is a professional calibre bowler. Murray is
now 30 -years -old, and for the past 10 years
has averaged a bowling score of around 240.
Mr. Bennewies is qualified to turn profes-
sional, and he hopes to someday. There is a
lot of time and -financing involved in profes-
sional bowling, and Mr. Bennewies says it is
hard to make a living as a bowler in Canada
because prizes^are not large enough. For
these reasons he's not making.any changes
in the next four or five years, but says he
eventually would like to go pro.
Mr. Bennewies has never bowled a perfect
game of 450, but he has had 418, and .has
been within one wobbly comer pin of a
perfect score. He has been over the 400
mark seven times, which is a° feat in itself.
and his highest triple score is 996. He's .
shooting for 1,000.
What is the secret to this bowling success
title
"Follow through, that's the whole secret,"
he says. "Reach out to the pins."
Mr. Bennewies will be reaching out in
Hamilton against 71 other very competitive
bowlers. They will all bowl four games, then
the top half of the bowlers are taken for four
more games, and the rest are eliminated.
After the second four games, the top five
bowlers are chosen from the remaining 36,
then the last five bowl off until a provincial
champion remains. The provincial sham-
- pionthen moves on to the ' national
chaflipionships
Mr. Bennewies is largely self taught, and
he does not bowl several times per week like
some of the .bowlers•he will be competing
against. He will also have to get used to str-
ingless bowling pins. unlike the ones he is
accustomed to. The ping without strings fly
differently, but he says he has had' some ex-
perience bowling with them, and 'hopes they
will fall his way in Hamilton.
"There's a lot of good bowlers out there."
he says. -I just hope to make the top hall."
Churches invited to share in Foodgrains donation'
As Egmondville United Church was
donating 1,000 bushels of corn for hunger
relief in Mali last March. they dreamed of
the day when this effort would be a com-
munity and not just a congregational one.
They are taking the first step towards mak-
ing that dream a reality by inviting, other
congregations as well as any interested in-
dividuals to a planning meeting Thursday.
January 19 at 8:30 p.m.
This year, the corn donation will again be
made through the Canadian Foodgrains
Bank. a partnership effort between nine
denominations. CFB food aid is used in two
key ways.
Eight per cent of alt donations shipped in
the past six months has been used for

emergency food relief with each metric •
tonne feeding 2,500 people for one day. •
The remaining 20 per cent has been
directed to. development work addressing
the causes of hunger. People are paid a dai-
ly ration of food for work on rehabilitation
projects such as the building of dams and
roads, reforestation, etc.
To ship the same amount as last year will
require even more fundg' due to higher
prices. However, if several congregations
work together; even the higher prices
shouldn't impede the sending of a substan-
tial shipment. All donations are matched 3:1
by the Canadian International Development
Agency meaning that each 1,000 bushels
sent generates 4,000 bushels of food aid. The
CFB- prides itselfon the careful accounting
for its shipments.
At every turn, this project 'seeks to fulfill
its motto and to be "A Christian Response to
Hunger".
Our mistake
In an editorial which appeared in last
week's edition of The Huron Expositor, we
inadvertently referred to the organizer of
the local March of Dimes Campaign as
Thelma Dale, instead of as Thelma Coombs.
Our apologies to Mrs. Coombs for the error,
and. best'of luck with the 1989 campaign.
