Joking back, some of the ac- complishments f tt,., past year the Legio:. was respunsibll Ior, lnclu,ie a 98.6 per cent successfu earl% bird campaign. for 1988: A first .vcrld war veteran Dave Netak a and his wife Evacelebrated their 74th Wedding An- niversary; In February the Legion donated $1,000 to minor hockey; Comrade Peter Malcolm was awarded a Life Membership at the Honors and Awards banquet held February 13, 1988; Ned Boswell was honored on his 100th birthday; and another public speaking contest was hosted by the Branch under chairman Bruce Wilbee. In March a euchre team from Seaforth came third in the District and went o0 to play in the Provincial tournament in Milton. A $1,000 donation to the Legion Charitable Foundation was also passed at the monthly meeting. • In April Lloyd Eisler and his partner/ Isabel Brasseur, World Figure skating par ticipants, headlined the Ice Show at the Community Centre. Lloyd is a member of Seaforth Branch. Mel Melanson was elected President of the Branch along with a new Executive at the monthly meeting. Another successful year of bowling ended with a ban- quet to present trophies to the Winning team and individual winners. The month of May saw the Ladies Aux- iliary elect new President Eva Brown with a new slate of officers for the coming year. Both the ladies' and men's Presidents and officers were installed by the installing team from Exeter. Decoration Day was held June 15 last year with a flag being placed on the graves of deceased Veterans. Ingrid Claus was chosen LEGION NEWS by Gordon Scott as the Legion's entrant in the Fall Fair Queen contest. The Branch sent four com- rades and their wives to the Dominion Con- vention in Ottawa. Track and Field chairman Betty Felker accompanied a bus load of athletes and parents to the District Track and Field meet held m Kitchener the beginning of July. Veterans from Parkwobd Hospital in Lon- don also visited the Branch. Brussels Legion was set on fire by arsonists leaving only the walls and roof intact. In August, the Branch held the Seniors Golf Tournament won by our Past President Jim Watson and the Ladies Auxiliary held the last of four suppers for the general public and members. The District held its first Honors and Awards banquet at Listowel in September with President Mel and Comrade Al Nicholson a recipien: of a long service award, in attendance, A donation of $10,000 was presented at the fair by Branch Presi- dent Mel Melanson to the Seaforth Hospital Fund. The Fall District Convention was held in the Stratford Legion the weekend of October 15 and 16, with members from Seaforth in attendance. The Legion bought new sweaters for the Pee Wee hockey team, Seaforth Branch hosted the First World War Banquet owing to the • fire at Brussels Legion. The Branch updated its Child Video Identification Program taping all the Kindergarten children in and around Seaforth. Residents welcomed the New Year at the Seaforth Manor with a New Year's party, Euchre, crokinole and other games were played followed by a tasty lunch of doughnuts and juice. Monday morning the residents budgie who was named "Peter", had a surprise for everyone when an egg was found in his cage and through the week another was laid. Some residents have suggested we change the name to "Polly" now. ' Tuesday morning the Grade VI children were back to assist with wheelchair bowling after their Christmas holidays. Residents were pleased to see the students again. In the afternoon, Darlene was busy taking den lgtiristmas.decorations and storing.for another year. Fun and Fitness exercises took place on Thursday morning in the day room and in the afternoon a 'welcome tea was held for Kathryn Waltham, a new resident. She also received a bouquet of flowers and a corsage. We hope she will enjoy her stay at Seaforth PEOPL Visitors with Pat and Rose Altman during the Christmas and New Year's holidays were: Doreen Bow 'and Ken Lampkin of Kitchener; Nancy nd-A.my Bos and Brian Feick of Stratford; Dave and Eva Netzke of the Seaforth Manor; Jessie Mawhinney, sister-in-law of Dave and Eva, from Kelowna, British Columbia; Jean Herzog, a niece, from Waterloo; and Delford and Nor- ma Altman and family of Orangeville. •s•re Douglas Wright of Kanata spent last week with his mother, Mrs. Gladys Wright, who has returned home from Stratford General Hospital. Henry Enzensberger of Goderich Street West, fell Wednesday evening breaking his left hip. On Thursday he was transferred to St. Jospeh's Health Centre where he under- went a hip operation. After a few more days he will be transferred to Seaforth Communi- ty Hospital for further treatment. Mr. Enzensberger is wished a speedy recovery. *4 U* BIRTHS quet was held with Hamn Summers as guest speaker. The Poppy drive was held Sunday, November 6 after a church service at the Anglican church and on November llth a service was held at the Cenotaph. Results of the Literary and poster contest were an- nounced by Literary chairman Bruce Wilbee. The Legion float entered in the Christmas Santa Claus parade was awarded first prize in its class. The 37th annual Christmas con- cert was held on December 18 with some 150 children receiving treats from Santa Claus. At the December meeting a donation of $1,000 was awarded to the High School Band to aid their trip to Calgary next July, A Levee was held on New Years Day from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. During the year, stag and mixed euthres were held along with cribbage nights on Monday nights duffing the fall and winter months. Darts were held most Saturday nights. There will be a stag euchre (tonight Wednesday, January 11 and every two weeks now until April. Cribbage is held .every Monday evening and darts Saturday evening. Starting time is 8 p.m. for all events. On Monday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. euchre and bridge will be a weekly event for all seniors of the community. Because of a euchre sponsored by the Junior Farmers, there will not be a Legion Euchre on Mon- day, January 16. Those of our Comrades who passed on in 1988 from Seaforth were Keith MacLean, James Watson Sr., Ned Boswell, Ed Daly and A.Y. MacLean. They grow not old as we that are left grow old. Greg Gilson of St. Thomas Anglican Church. Friday was shopping day for a number of residents. There were also exercises in the morning. Resident Council held its January meeting on Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m. Patrick Ryan will be President for another year and Edith Jessome will be vice- president. Margaret and Frank Smale recently received a lonely scroll from Mme Jeanne Suave Governor General of Canada, con- gratulating them on celebrating their Golden Wedding Anniversary. Previously they had received one from Brian Mulroney, Prime Minister of Canada, and David Peter- son, Premier of Ontario. We wish Margaret and Frank many more years together. PERSONALS Edith Jessome enjoyed a three day holi- OBITUARIES STEWART MILLER Stewart Miller died Monday, January .2, 1989 at the Wingham and District Hospital. Hewas9l. A son of the late Robert and Margaret Miller, he was a member of St. • John's Masonic Lodge No: 284 A.F. and A.M. He is survived by one brother William of Brussels and one sister Jessie (Mrs. John Boyd) of Seaforth. Mr. Miller was predeceased by one . brother Mervin in 1972 and one sister Lena (Mrs. William Boyd) in 1980. Funeral services were held Wednesday, January 4, 1989 from the Watts Funeral Home; Brussels Chapel. Spring interment Brussels Cemetery. In remembrance donations may be made to the Brussels United Church, or the chari- ty of one's choice. LOUIS CHARLES REEVES Louis Charles Reeves of Main Street North in Seaforth, died Friday, January 6, 1989 at the Seaforth Community Hospital. Born in ieaforth, Mr. Reeves was a son of the late William George Reeves and the former MargaretShade. Hewes a member of Egmondville United Church, a 50 -year member of the IOOF, and a longtime member of the Eastern Star and Britannia Masonic Lodge. Be retired from the Seaforth PUC following 25 years of service. Mr. Reeves is survived by two daughters, Margaret (Mrs. Jack Ungarian) of Seaforth and Meta (Mrs. Ray Childs) of Greenwood, Nova Scotia; one son George of Seaforth; nine grandchildren; and three sisters, Jane Hildebrand of Seaforth , Pearl Neely of Stratford, and Nellie Knott of Clinton. He was predeceased by his wife, the former Helen Salter, and by one sister, Georgina Webster. Friends were received at the Whitney- Ribey Funeral Home in Seaforth and a funeral service was held Tuesday. Spring in- terment will be at Maitlandbank Cemetery, Seaforth. An IOOF memorial service was held Monday. Pallbearers were Don Webster, Tom Phillips, Jack Muir, Dennis Medd, Brett Finlayson and Doug Smale. , As expressions of sympathy donations may be made to the Seaforth Community Hospital, Bailing Fund.
