HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Huron Expositor, 1989-01-11, Page 7THE HURON EXPOSITOR, JANUARY 11 1989 7A THIS WEEK IN Seaforth defeats Herlev The bantam hockey team from Herlev has returned to Denmark after two weeks and seven hockey games in Canada, The Danes would have gone home unbeaten, but in their last Canadian game against Seaforth Saturday, they met their first loss. The last of the international games to be seen in Seaforth this year was played before what was almost a full house. Herlev opened the scoring in the contest with a shot that hit a Seaforth defenceman in final game and deflected into the net. But the Seaforth Bantams played like a team with a mission Saturday , and didn't allow Herlev to dominate play as they did in the first game Jason McNichol started the Seaforth scor- ing when he carried the puck around the Herlev defences deked their goalie to score unassisted b forth took the lead when Steve/Papple picked up the rebound from a sho from the point and put it behind the Herlev goaltender. Corbett photo . eaforth Atoms The Atoms hockey team was busy over the Christmas holidays. On December 21 the team travelled to Mitchell. During this game many players had the opportunity to 'play a different position and the team came up with an 8 to 3 victory. The Mitchell teamstarted the scoring; but Colin Devereaux, assisted by Steve Mclnal- ly, soon tied the score for Seaforth. Seaforth's Pat Gridzak, assisted by Jason Murray and Brent Hulley, moved Seaforth into the lead shortly after. Seaforth came back in the second period with three more goals, to gain a bigger lead Scoring for Seaforth were Boyd Devereaux Mike Hugill and Brent Hulley. Earning assists were Jason Henderson and Steve Mclnally. The third period saw more action in the Seaforth net when Mitchell netted two more goals. But the Seaforth squad netted three. to give a final score of 8 to 3. Steve Mclnally. Jason Henderson, and Chris Marion each scored in the third with assists to Pat Grid- zak, Steve Mclnally, Jason Smith, Boyd Devereaux, Jason Murray • and Jason Henderson. POST CHRISTMAS PLAY On December 27 the Seaforth atoms hosted Wingham for a close and exciting game. Seaforth's Shaun Anstett started the scor- Knights edge KNIGHTS 1-WINTHROP 0 Paul Nyenhuis scored the only goal of this game for the Knights. Winthrop played great and had numerous chances on scor- ing, but nothing panned out in this good game of broomball. PARR LINE 3 -RAIDERS 3 Paul Parsons got the tying goal for the ' Raiders when he slapped the ball over the head of the Parr Line goalie. Help came from Ken DeCorte and Larry Parsons. Other goals came from Tony Arts, who chip - .ped the ball into the net with help from Bob Jansen. Jeff Campbell scored unassisted by booming the ball into the top corner of the net. Ed Salverda scored for Parr Line. assisted by Paul Gibbings. Gibbings himself scored two goals, one with only 22 seconds left in the game. He was assisted on that goal by Roy Fisher and Craig Piet. ROYALS 1 -EASY RIDERS 5 Steve Haggitt accumulated a pair of goals for the Easy Riders. Rick Harris assisted. Ed Van Miltenburg also recorded a goal. with help from Jeff Allen. Wayne Gingerich got the final Rider goal after breaking down ice with a pass from John Bicknell. Al Wyn- ja scored the only Royal's goal, unassisted. RIVER RATS 0 -GRADS 3 Bill Hotson scored (two goals for the Grads, off passes from Gary Dill. Tony Van Denhevel got the third goal unassisted. The River Rats, plagued by shots that rung off the cross bar and tingled the goal posts, were unable to score. DUMPERS 3 -RED RUSTLERS 0 Brett Finlayson was on the ice two miputes when he tipped the ball past the Red Rustler goalie. He was assisted by Gord Henderson and John Devereaux. Dale Ken- nedy scored asecond Dumper goal and John Cairns the third. Cairns was assisted by Rich Archambault and Kennedy. The Rustlers' goalie played superbly. LADIES'BROOMBALL PARR LINE B JR. FARMERS 0 .Sueanne Van Miltenburg nabbed two goals and two assists in this contest. Glenda Caput and Donna Preszcator ,helped her .put. Bev Shea got another .of Parr Line's A,goals.assisted by Joan .Henderson. Shea successful THE FIRST TIME Seatorth Bantam Jason McNichol broke in alone on the Herlev goaltender. the Dane stopped him. But minutes later McNichol,got the game winning goal in the match. and Seatorth was the only Canadian team to bet the Danes. Their tying goal came when Seaforth left a Herlev player alone too long in front of their net, Herlev's go-ahead goal came after a long pass that set up a breakaway. Seaforth tied the game before the period could end, when McNichol broke for the Herlev net and Ted Sills put the puck on his stick. Jason Beuttenmiller also assisted on the play. The score was tied at three going into the third period and the crowd was on the edge of its seat. It was Jason McNichol who broke the game open again. Jason Muir and Ted Sills set up McNichol for a breakaway, and he waited until he was almost in the goaltender,'s crease before he flipped the puck into the top corner to score his third goal of the evening and the game winner. The question on everyone's mind was would the Danes explode into another third period scoring drive as they did in the dying minutes of the first game against Seaforth' But the Seaforth bantams were playing this game a lot tougher, and strong defence and good goaltending contributed to the win Steve Papple scored an insurance goal assisted by Kevin McLlwain, and the final score was 5-3 for Seaforth. . The Herlev team was successful in Canada, and won the first six of its seven games here. They defeated Seaforth 7-4, Mitchell 9-6, Mt. Forest 10-4, Listowel 6-4, Kincardine 8-5, and Wingham 8-6. A banquet was held after the game for the Herlev hockey players and their Seaforth hosts. The Seaforth Bantams were invited back to Herlev next season. The Herlev team departed Seaforth at 3 p.m. on Sunday. Seaforth Novice two time winner on weekend . Un Saturday . January - the Seaforth Novice team travelled to Goderich. Seaforth started the scoring when Derek Smith managed to get his stick on the puck during a scramble in front of the net. The se- cond goal was scored by Scott Van Dooren. After many tries his determined effort final- ly paid off when he put it in the net. Jeremy McNichol scored the next goal on the back - in Christmas outings mg at the 5.27 mark of the first period Shaun's goal was assisted by Boyd Devereaux and Cohn Devereaux. About three minutes later Shaun scored another. assisted by Boyd and Pat Gridzak. to give the Seaforth boys a two goal lead after the first stanza. Seaforth seemed to be off and running again in the second when Pat Gridzak scored, assisted by Boyd and Jason Hender- son. The Wingham team wasn't long scoring two goals to narrow Seaforth's lead at the end of the second. . Boyd Devereaux scored the only goal in the third period to win the. game 4-2. On December 29 the team travelled to Wingham for another exhibiton game. The Seaforth 'boys just couldn't seem -to put it together. Although they had many chances m the game they couldn't get the puck past the Wingham goaltender. The second period saw the only goals of the game. when Wingham netted two. The. final score was 2-0 for Wingham On January 3 the Seaforth squad travelled to Clinton. Clinton was the first on the scoreboard when • Mike Hohner scored assisted by Trever Buruma and Joey Mac- Donald. The Seaforth boys had their chances in the first but couldn't net the puck. However, the scoreboard was evened up in the second when Boyd Devereaux scored assisted by Shaun Anstett and Jason Henderson. Play was tied at the start of the third but the Seaforth team was out for a win. Seaforth's Jason Murray scored a hat trick. Jason's goals were assisted by Pat Gridzak Colin Devereaux and Steve Mcinally. The Seaforth boys still wanted more goals, so Shaun Anstett and Chris Marion finished up the scoring. Assists went to Jason Murray and Boyd Devereaux. The final score was. 6-1 Seaforth. On January 7 the team travelled to Goderich where the fans saw some excellent passing and team work. Although Goderich was first on the scoreboard, Seaforth wasn't long catching up and as a result netted 12 goals while Goderich scored 2. Goal scorers were Boyd Devereaux with a hat trick, Jason Henderson, Shaun Anatett, Jason Murray, Steve Menially each adding two while Pat Gridzak added one. Earning assists were Boyd Devereaux. Colin Devereaux, Jason Henderson, Pat Gridzak. Shaun Anstett, Jason Murray. On Sunday, January 8, the team had another away game, this time in Listowel. Once again the boys came out ahead, 7-1. At press time, the score sheet was . not available, but from all understanding all players had an excellent game. Winthrop 1-0 in also got an assist, Sandi Fremlin also con- tributed a goal and an assist, as did defenceman Heidi Elliott and Sharon Whitefield. Jan Rutledge, Sandra Wilson and Lori Symons added a goal each as well. QUEENS 1-WINTHROP 0 The Queens ladies were outplayed for most of this game, but got a lucky break for the win when Brenda Empy got a rebound shot from Jean Haggitt and popped it in the net. Great game. COMMERCIAL 3 -PERTH 0 Linda Boyd scored two of the Commer- cial's goals in this outing, assisted by Belles deserve win On Sunday, January 8 the Seaforth Belles played Stratford and opened up the new year with a win. The game started off with Stratford scor- ing the first goal at the 16:07 mark and followed by another goal to lead 2-0. This on- ly gave Seaforth even more reason to work harder. The girls wore not going to give up as Jen Watt starts the scoring off assisted by Amy Vanden Akker. The first period ended with Tammy Nash finding a hole in the, top right corner, assisted by Sheri Kling and Heather McKercher. The second period saw Seaforth take off and never look back as Amy Vanden Akker used her fancy backhand flipshot and b''roomba l F hand shot from right in front of the net. Brandon Nash made a perfect pass from the corner to Derek Solidi who was standing unguarded in front of the Goderich net for the fourth goal. The final goal was scored when Michael Mullin picked up a rebound and put it in the net. The final score was Seaforth 5-Goderich 0. The ..following day. the team travelled through stormy weather to Listowel. Seaforth's first goal was scored by Bruce Griffin with a hard shot from the point. The assist went to Michael Mullin. Listowel r) scored late in the first period to tie the score at '1-1, Although there was no scoring in the se- cond period, the Listowel team put lots of pressure on goalie Josh Dietz. In Goderich he had seen very little -action but the Listowel team tested him several times and he made many excellent saves. With only three minutes left to play In the game, Charles Robertson passed the puck tt, Mark Van Dooren who made an end to end rush and scored the winning goal. The fins: score was Seaforth 2, Listowel 1. In Ladies' Broomball on January 11 at 8 p.m. Queens vs. Parr Line; 8:50 p.m. Jr. Farmers vs. Commercial and 9:40 p.m. Perth vs. Winthrop. in Men's Broomball January 12 at 7:30 �.m. Royals vs. River Rats; 8:20 p.m. Red 3.ustlers vs. Knights; 9:10 p.m. Grads vs. dumpers; 10:00 p.m. Easy Riders vs. .aiders and 10:50 p.m. Winthrop vs. Parr .ins. againstStratford NOBEL SANITATION scored, assisted by Jen Watt. The girls took the lead and kept it with every determina- tion to beat the hard hitting Stratford team. The win was in their pockets as Amy Vanden Akker scored at the 4:54 mark assisted by teammate Tammy Nash. The final score was Seaforth 4, Stratford 2. The win would not have been, if it wasn't for some excellent saves made by goaltender Shelly O'Brien. She deserves a pat on the bock for a job well done. The girls next game is in Seaforth against Mitchell on January 15. This should prove to be another good game and "hopefully" a win for the girls. PeeWees tie Clinton ' -3 The Seaforth Peewee I team travelled to Clinton January 5 for a league game and tied Clinton 3-3. Scoring for Seaforth were Mike Watt one goal and Wayne Schoonderwoerd two goals. Assists went to Mika Devereaux two and Joe Murray one. On Saturday the PeeWees travelled to Port Elgin for Legion District tournament. The first game Seaforth met Elora and came up with a 4-3 win. Scoring for Seaforth were .MikeaWatt;two:goals, Joe Murray,one and Jonathon Hugill one. Assists went to Mike Moylan, Wayne Schoonderwoerd two, Mike Weber and Joe Murray and Mike Devereaux. Seaforth's next game was against Listowel and came up short as Listowel defeated them 7-2. Scoring for Seaforth were Mike Watt with two goals with assists going to Mike Weber two and Nlike;Moylan .two. Seforth PeeWees next home game is January :14,in,Seafogth,against iW,ingham.
