The Huron Expositor, 1989-01-04, Page 9Seahawks ring in New Year with win The Seaforth Seahawks used three shor- thanded goals to help ring the old year out in style with a 6-4 win over the defending - champion Brussels Crusaders at the arena Friday night. It was close, stilt anybody's game until Greg Murray's insurance goal into arvernpty net with 26 seconds left nailed . it. The Seaforth intermediates moved into sole possession of second place in the Western Ontario Athletic Associa 'on's southern division with the victory, w 'ch leaves them with 13 points from six three losses and a tie. Wellesley, which hosted the Seahawks to a 7-2 loas December 23, leads the loop with 21 points but Seaforth has two games in handl Brussels fell to third with Friday's loss, two points back of the Seahawks. Seaforth hasn't lost in its five home games this season. They host cellar -dwelling Ar- thur this Friday night at 8:30., Kevin Melady's second goal of the game at the mid -way point of the third period broke a 4-4 tie and stood up as the winner. Jim Campbell also scored a pair of goals for the Seahawks, and Kevin Williamson added another. The Seahawks led 2-1 after the•first period, 4-3 after the second 20 minutes of play, and they took advantage of the Brussels' powerplay by scoring three goals against it. That was about the only dif- ference between the squads in the well - played and entertaining contest. Kevin MCArter paced the Crusaders with two'goals. Singles came from the sticks of Randy. Clark and Ken Higgins. Referee Gary Black tagged the Seahawks with 12 of 22 minor penalties called. The team was scheduled to play Aylmer in their first game of the day. Both teams started out very slowly and consequently there was no scoring in the fir t period. It wasn't until halfway throtth the second period that a goal was put on the scoreboard. Unfortunately, it was for Aylmer. However, with only 24 seconds left to play in the second period, Mark Van Dooren scored on a power play: After the intermission, Seaforth came out flying. Jeremey McNichol scored FARMER'S CURLING COMPETITION - Greg Beuermann curls a rock in the zone playdown of the Provincial Farmers Curling Championship hosted, by the Seaforth Curl- ing Club this week, Mr. Beuermann's team of Ed Salverda, Brian McGavin, and Ron Pryce was eliminated after three games, but another team from the Seaforth area, made up of Gary McNichol, Laurie Fischer, Rick McDonajd, and Gord Pryce, will be one of 32 teams to compete in Wallaceburg in the provitial playdowns in January, Corbett photo. unassisted at the 8:22 mark. The final score was Seaforth 4 Aylmer 1. The next game on the schellule was against Petrolia. The boys knew they had to win this one to advance to the finals but they also knew that Petrolia had won every game so far at the tournament by a wide margin. The boys tried their best but Petrolia is an excellent checking team and Seaforth was defeated by a score of 5-0. The boys , each received an attractiire Silver Stick crest. Local farmers team moves on to pr�._-.'vancials The Provincial Farmers Curling Cham- pionship zone playdown was hosted by the Seaforth Curling Club on December 27, 28 and 29 with 16 teams participating. Teams coming from Harriston, Chesley, Exeter, • Wingham, Listowel, Allenford, Belmore, Vanastra, Meaford and Pahnerston were in town for the bonspiel. Of these, four advanced to the Ontario Curl- ing Association Provincial Farmers Curling • Championship, This event will be held on January 20,21 and 22 irrWallaceburg, and will See 32 teams from across Ontario com- pete for $15,000 in prizes sponsored by BASF Chemicals. One team from Walton consisting of: lead Gary McNichol, second Laurie Fischer, vice Rick McDonald, and skip Gord Pryce will be advancing to Wallaceburg. They were unheated in three games over the bonspiel. The other three teams -from this zone to ad- vance come from Palmerston and two from Chesley. A Seaforth team consisting of skip Ron Pryce,Craig Beuermann, Ed Salverda, Brian McGavin and Eric McIntosh was eliminated after three games. , Plans underway far second celebrity dinner Children's Recreational Gymnastics will be held on Saturday afternoon at the .Seaforth High School. There will be two dif- ferent age groups - 3 to 7 years of age will start at 2 p.m. and end at 3 p.pJ1 and the 8 years of age and older will bean at 3 p.m. and finish at 4 p.m. This program will begin on Saturday, January 14, 1989. Registration fee will be $30.00 per child. $75 for a family of three, or $100.00 for a family of four. Your instructor will be Starr Jesney. BALL ROOM DANCING will be held at the I -j RECREATION PREVI by Ma edard Seaforth and District Community Centres (Arena) on Thursday evenings starting at 7:30 p.m. This program will begin on,Thurs- day, January 12. Registration fee will be $40.00 per couple. Come out, enjoy, and learn a few new dance steps from Lou Morello. COMING IN MARCH the Recreation Department will be offering adult golf -lessons.
