Scrooge tactics win hockey
BY DAVE BRa;OME
The long awaited rubber
match between the Flyers
and Penguins turned out to be
somewhat of a dud Dec. 19.
Those expecting a close
exciting matchup were dis-
appointed when the Myers
smoked the Pens by a 7-2
score.
Most observers agree that
Pen goalie Jerry Martin was
responsible for keeping the
score respectable as he faced
and stopped a barrage of

The win was the FlYers 9th
straight and that sets a new
1.H.L. record for consecutive
victories.
More important, though, is
that the big triumph gives the
orangeshirts sole ownership
of first place.
They have combined a
Scrooge -like defence with a
free -wheeling offence and
that rare (by II.H.L. stand-
ards) fearsome combination
provides the league with a
powerful entity.
In fact. this club is one of
the strongest to take part in
this league in recent years.
Of course, the ghost off
pennant winners past still
haunts the industrial Hockey
League. Regular season
champions have a history off
falling flat on their collective
faces come playoff time.
The Pens are still in the
hunt for the pennant but pow
their fate rests with four other
clubs because the Orange-
men took the season series by
a 2 game to 1 tally.

for the winners with singles

the Advent Wreath, and the
completion of the Jesse Tree
by Rev, Wilena Brown. The
children pointed out the
scenes of t$e Nativity on Miss
Brown's Christmas poster,
made from Christmas card
scenes. Special music by the
young people's choir and the
Varna Singers added to the
worship.

(intended for last week)
On Dec. 14 the Seaforth
Midget team met Mitchell in
an exciting high scoring
game. Seven goals. were
scored in the first period
alone, five of which were
Seaforth's.
First two goals for Seaforth
were scored by Greg Murray,
one assisted by Kevin
Melady, the other by David
Campbell. Greg scored the
next Seaforth goal unassist-
ed. David Campbell scored
the next goal, followed one
minute later by Darren Crock-
er's assisted by Dan Van Loon
and Dan Sloan.
Of three goals in the second
period, one was scored by
Seaforth's David Campbell
assisted by Jerry Wright and
Kevin Williamson. In the last
period Seaforth scored two of
the three goals. David
McLlwain assisted on Greg
Murray's goal and Todd
Morey's.
The scoring shows a good
all round effort from all lines
particularly Greg Murray.
This was the first decisive win
over Mitchell. Final score was
Seaforth 8, Mitchell 5.
On Dec. 21 Wingham visit-
ed Seaforth. While scoring
wasn't as high as the Mitchell
game, it proved to be just as
exciting.
Period -one saw Seaforth
and Wingham tied one goal
apiece. Greg Murray scored
the first goal, assisted by
Kevin Melady.
In the second period scores
evened up again as Grog
scored, assisted by David
McLlwain and Barry' Camp-
bell. Brett Cameron of Wing -
ham followed within one
minute to tie for Wingham.

RANGERS 8IIIAWKS 1
The Rangers had a full
squad on hand Sunday night
and had little trouble toying
with the Hawks in cat -like
fashion.
The Blueshirts rolled to an.
easy 8-1 win over the short-
handed and uncaring Hawks
who offered passive resist-
ence to the winners.
Mike Flanagan, acting like
the grinch who stole the
Hawk -Christmas, tallied
three times for the Rangers,.
Kevin Coyne and Jon
Devereaux each chipped'in a
pair of goals with Jim Hen-
derson adding a single mark-
er.
John Janmaat replied for
the Hawks who should be
ecstatic with the two week
layoff.

are also very good from the

Seaforth finally went ahead
with a goal by Mark Stapleton
assisted by Dave Campbell
and Dave M£Ltwain. Cam-
eron came back to score again
with four minutes left in the
period.
With a tie game in the third
period both teams moved up
and down the ice. Both
goalies kept their teams in the
game. Mike Schwarz played a
good first period and Derek
Cooper played well in the
next two. Finally David
McLlwain backhanded the
puck in the net, assisted by
Kevin Melady and Darren
Crocker.
The final minutes of play
saw a concentrated effort
by Wingham to even the
score with six attackers but
good defensive play helped
Seaforth keep their lead even
'though playing shorthanded
up to the last minute,
Final score was Seaforth 4,
Wingham 3.
Next home game is Tues-
day, Dec. 28 against Brussels
at 6:45 before the junior
game. This team is the only
team that has defeated Sea -
forth in the regular schedule.

CANADIANS 7 BRUINS 4
The Canadians must have
been wondering if Santa was
going to show up this year.
Their fears were put to rest
during the nights middle
match when lo and behold the
old boy made an appearance
at the arena dressed in a
Bruin uniform.
He gave the Canucks a gift
in the form of a 7-4 victory
over the Bears and it ended
an 8 game losing skein for the
redshirts.
The Canadians last success
was a 9-2 slapping of these'
same Bruins way back on
October 17th -two months to
be exact.
The Bruins again toiled
while missing some key men
and a rash of silly penalties
didn't help the cause much
either.

Gord O'Dwyer paced the
Canucks to the easy conquest
by getting the hat trick.
Ron Quipp contributed a
pair with Gary Finnigan and
Gerry Feeney adding singles.
Brian Cooper's three
scores and Brian Nigh's solo
effort were not enough to lift
the Bruins.
I.H.L. notes: i would like to
take this time to wish all the
readers a Merry Christmas
and a successful new year. A
greeting to those out west in
Alberta and B.C. who won't
be home for the holidays.
May the season be a good
one for Rob, Marg, Larry,

read the Expositor. And a
special wish goes to Beth and
