Town council
At its December meet-
ing, Seaforth council discuss-
ed the following:
A request from the Goder-
ich fire department to use the
'county police dispatch system
for fire calls was referred to
' the police committee. The
recommendation of town en-
gineer Burns Ross and works •
superintendent John Forrest
that power flushing of sani-
tary sewers be done every
year was accepted. "It can be
- costly, We should budget so
much and then go as far as the
t dollars go," Mr. Forrest said.
Sewers in town have never
been done, while others in
towns have, It's part of yearly
maintenance, he said.
Brain repair near the nur-
sery school cannot be eharged
to the company which recon•
structed the street last year,
council heard, because the
drain was sub -grade, New
lighting at the curling club
parking lot and the town's
agreement with the dub will
be reviewed and brought to
the next council meeting.
During discussion on the
arrest at an attempted break -
and -enter at Keating's Phar-
macy, councillor Bill Martin
asked what nn incident like
that costs the town. Police
chief Hal Claus said it'was
hard to generalize but be-
cause it took place in the
middle of the night, overtime
was necessary. Plus travel
time to take a suspect to
Goderich if charged and
Stratford if jailed, added
councillor Wayne Ellis. "The
more effective you guys are,
the more it costs," comment-
ed councillor Martin.
When councillor Henry
Mero asked if there is an
active Justice of the Peace in
Seaforth' Chief Claus replied
Bob Dinsmore had taken an
updating course and should
be re -instated by •a judge
shortly.
Hazel Hildebrand, as
chairman of council's finance
committee, was given'signing
authority, in the absence of
the mayor and deputy clerk
Luanne Phair, signing au-
'Jhority in the absence of the
clerk.
Council passed a bylaw,.
setting ' 1'/4 per cent per
month as the interest rate on
tax arrears. The current rate
is 18 per cent per year;but
council is restricted by law to
charging either 11/2 per cern
•above prime or 15 oer cent.
briefs //
A bylaw authorizi4 the
borrowing of 5700,000 to
meet 1983 expenses until
taxes are collected was pass-
ed, •
Pay for council members
for Nov. meetings was passed
including '5450 for former
mayor, John Sinnamon; $200
for former reeve, Bill Dale:
5200 for deputy reeve, Bill
Bennett: $380 for former
' councillor Bob Dinsmore;
5200 for former councillor
Gerald Groothuis; and 5155
for Hazel Hildebrand; 5200
for Irwin Johnston; 5335 for
Alf Ross and 5110 for Paul
Ross.
Following its inaugural
meeting Der.', council mem-
bers, town employees and
their spouses had a dinner at
the Commercial Hotel. This
replaced .the town's annual
-wine and cheese party. to
which a larger group, includ-
ing citizen members of town
committees were invited.
The town hopes to recover
54,299.25 in sales tax re -
'bates, and the fire board
5991,05, following applica-
tion by consultant Hugh
LaFay.
