Oldtimers a few hockey tips during their Sunday game. Both teams
played ,well in addition to some slapstick antics during the game. The
NHL beat the Beavers 12-9 in a respectable game. (Svela photo)

Our own Industrial Hockey
I eague began play Sunday
night in the new arena and
there were a couple of sur-
prises to begin thc new era.
the Bruins opened in fine
style by upsetting the Rang-
ers .4.3.
Tom Johnston became the
first I.H.1 skater to score in
the new facility when h
nnncctcd at 5,32 of th
opening stanza for the Rang-
ers.
I.nfortunately. his goal
couldn't boost his team to
better things and the Blue -
shirts lost their Sth game in
nine outings.
Ron Hildebrand continues
to hold a hot hand for the
Bears. He scored twice Sun•
day night to pace his club to
thc big skicky.
Brian Cooper and Terry
Stephenson added the other
Bruin scores.
Johnston chipped in ano-
ther goal with time running
out and Howie Breen poked in
a lone goal to round out the
Ranger scoring.

ing what he di' wrong to
inspire the wrath of his
ts•ammates.
His squad cast him adrift
and he fended for himself
most of the night in a sea of
orangcshirtcd sharks.
Most of the play occurred
in the Hawk tone as the
birds fell 9 4 to the Flyers. It
was the first encounter of the
season between the two
teams.
Casey Klascr paced the
winners by netting the hat
trick.
Dave Broome added a pair
with singles going to Bill
O'Shea, Steve Smrth. George
Reeves and Rick Dalrymple.
Four skaters shared the
Hawks scoring with John
Wilson. John .lanmaat. Jcr•
rime Auhin and Marc Robi-
nette all getting goals.
It ryas the Flyers 8th
straight win
PENGUINS 4 CANADIANS 3
Ken Swan notched 3 goals
including the winner with just
2:55 left in the game to give
the Penguins a surprisingly
difficult 4-3 late game win
over the last place Canadians.
The Pen triumph gives
them the same -8 win 1 loss
mark as the *Fivers and the
two dubs meet next Sunday
night.
Paul Hullev had the other
goal for the winners.
Gord O'Dwyer. John Rob•
arts and Ron Quipp• on a very
solo effort. replied for
the ucks who lost their 8th
consecutive match. As in the
case of thye evenings first two
games. this was the first time
these teams faced each other
this season.
I.H.L. Notes: There will he
no I.H.L. hockey on Boxing
Day. No doubt the return
home will boost team attend-
ance. The first two games last
week would not win any merit
points for artistic endeavour.
The Canuck-Pen game was
the hest played Sunday eve•
ning.
Once again it is time for
this season's most improved
player awards. Ron Hilde-
brand has settled down some
what and is producing well for
the Bruins., Rick Dalrymple
and Man Caron have been
pleasant surprises for the
Flyers and big reasons why
they are currently riding an 8
game win streak. Perhaps the
most improved player award
should go to Howie Breen of
the Rangers. He has already
scored 1- points thus far this
season and that surpasses his
total of 12 that he amassed
last year. He has also been
among the more consistent
performers in the league.
There have not been any
shutouts or ties for this
year. The lack of a tie is the
biggest oddity. Thc Flyers
and Penguins are running
away from the rest of the
pack. Both clubs have 16
points so far and that is 8
more than the nearest rival.
With lust 6 games left it
appears to he a two team race
for the league pennant. Pen•
alts minutes and scoring is
still way down over the same
period a near ago despite
some high scoring matches
that characterized play for a 3
week stretch. The Bruins lead
the circuit with 109 penalty
minutes. Ron Hildebrand is
the individual leader with 34.
The Flyers have scored '4
goals and that tops the
league. The same team leads
in goaltending. The orange
shirts have allowed just 26
goals so far. The Hawks are
the least penalised team with
a mere 66 minutes.
