A TICKLISH KISS—Four-year-old Lindsay Michie, daughter of Lloyd
and Nancy Michie, gave Santa a big hug and kiss following the Brussels
Santa Claus parade last Saturday. Over 550 kids lined the street to greet
Santa and receive a bag of goodies. (Wassink photo)
An evening of Christmas music has been
arranged for in Brussels. 1t will be a
community evening for family enjoyment
along with friends and neighbours. You are
invited to join in, and listen to, favourite
Christmas songs and carols, Choirs of village
churches will share the music of the season
with you. Be at the Brussels United Church at
7:30, Tuesday December 21st, to share in this
evening of Christmas music.
Santa Claus arrived in Brussels on Saturday
afternoon bringing with him some of that
Arctic air from the North Pole. There were not
as many entries in the Santa Claus parade as
the committee in charge must of hoped for.
The cold weather may have kept some away
who might otherwise have entered a float.
There were, however, some quite nice ones.
The parade route had scattered spectators on
the way, warmly clad. with feet stamping to
keep circulation alive. A good crowd awaited
Santa in the main street area. St. Nick
distributed popcorn and candy to the young-
sters who joined him at the fire hall. The
Guides' and Brownies' booth. dispensing hot •
chocolate, was a welcome warmer -up for those
chilled by the frosty air. The crowd did not
linger long after Santa's visit. They were
probably anxious to hurry home away from the
cold outdoors.

Parents, beginning when their little Ones are
able to look at a picture book, should introduce
children early to the wonderful world of books.
Read to them until they are able to read. When
they can do that take them to your local library
fond help them select books suitable to their
age, or ability to understand. In years to come
they will thank you for encouraging them to
enjoy the pleasure of reading. h opens the way
to acquire knowledge of anything that interests
them. Children who learn to read intelligently
early do better later than those who do not. In
Brussels library you will find a large collection
of all kinds of books for all axes. --ft non •fiction
nnedy
and 783 books of fiction for children. Pictuie
books for young children; books for those
starting to read;aper backs and juvenile up to
age 13 and 14 from romance to mystery. In
nonfiction there are books on history,
geography. nursery rhymes, crafts. sports,
travel, birds and animals. Encourage your
children to read.
In spite of what most of us think not all
traffic accidents are caused by bad drivers.
Good drivers also cause many of them. The
Canada Safety Council tells us good drivers
cause accidents when they become careless or
inattentive because of stress at work or in the
home: failure to adjust to road and driving
conditions; or that extra drink. Driving under
stress can be just as hazardous as driving on an
icy road. Winter is here so make sure your car
is ready for the conditions that will resist.
' The Christmas Season is here and with it
those pre -Christmas parties that have become
so popular among friends and relatives. Such
parties setaom tack Inc nquta refreshments
that have become part of these gatherings. On
these happy occasions a drink with'friends is
enjoyable but unless taken in moderation they
are a hazardous pleasure if you must drive
later in the. evening. If you are a host see that
no guest leaves without a safe driver at the
w heel.

The chief long-range forcaster of the U.S.
National\Weather service does not agree with
those Who predict an incredible cold winter for
the U.S. He predicts a 60 to b5 per cent chance
of a warmer -than -average winter for the
eastern 'United States. May we hope that he is
right and that kind of weather will 'spill over
int oour part of Canada. For most of us it is cold
enough right now without the temperature
dropping much' farther without mentioning
what it will do to our already astronomically
high fuel bills.
