Love, Jeff Ryan, 6 years old Mr. and Mrs. Clause by Pam, Cindy & Vlcld Carter Christmas in hot climes would be strange BY PATRICIA RIMMER Christmas in Seaforth just wouldn't seem like Christmas without snow. 'People are always dreaming of a white Christmas. but wish that the snow would disappear on Boxing Day. Can you imagine Christmas in a climate with 90 degree temperatures instead of six degrees below. as we are accustomed to? It just wouldq t be the same. Therk would be some ob- vious differences. Carolers wouldn't have to bundle up before they head out on their route. In fact it might be too hot to carol outside. air-condi- tioned porches might be more appropriate! After Christmas carolling. people in Seaforth and area like to go back home and warm up with hot choco- late. coffee and other bever- ages. This would not be the case in Florida. They would probably want to cool down with a soft drink or another cold drink. Decorations might be a little bit different in Florida or southern states and countries such as Africa. The lights wouldn't have the same glow they have on snow covered bushes or eaves troughs if they were amongst flowers or green plants. Hanging Frosty the Snowman up on your door wouldn't seem right in Myrtle Beach either. For poor old Santa Claus. things would be a little different as well. Instead of a sleigh. Santa would have to find another means of trans- portation. A hang glider. maybe. Perhaps he wouldd•t want to get rid of his reindeer so would invest in a large wagon Rudolph would feel a lot better about the whole situation because the others would have red noses as well. They, would probably suffer fromsun burn. 1 imagine the reindeer would be better fed in the south since all of the vegetables would be freshly grown. Santa's elves would find it a change as well. They would have to make different types of toys for children in the south because skis and to- boggans would he of no use to them. Water skis and moto- skis would be a little closer to the desires of southern child - remand teens. And there are no Canadian hosers down south. eh. so toques would be out of the question. Back to the elves. The eb'es would get wrinkled up in the hot south. They would have to be dressed in shorts or bathing suits because with all of their Work, they would be awfully hot in the suits they wear in the North Pole. Santa would have a differ- ent job as well. He too would be really hot in his bright red suit so might change into something more suitable for the climate. The colour red is all wrong for the hot weather so he might try a nice light' pastel bink: or light blue. Another difference in his appearance would be his beard- I'm afraid that the beard would have to go because it is just too hot. As 1 said before. the toys would be different in the south. Santa's method of delivering the toys would be different as well. Instead of sliding down a chimney. he might climb through a win- dow or easier vet. walk through a door. You see. there is no need for fireplaces in the south. so a chimney would be unnecessary. In every home there would not be a pine tree decorated in the corner, but a palm tree. Santa Claus would not give out candy canes because candy canes would melt in the south. Outside there would be no snowman. but sand castles instead. Santa"s snack would not consist of the snacks that we leave but would consist of something more refreshing. So there you have the old elf. dressed in shorts or light pants of a Tight colour and material. wearing a sun visor instead of a hat and sandals instead of boots. 1 imagine he would weigh a tot less down south as well because of all of the running around he would haye to do. Mrs. Claus would be sure to accompany him on his tourney in case he was to run into any thunder storms (not snow storms) and to keep a careful eye on him when he visits the homes of those beautiful bikini wearers in the south. Christmas cake in the south would not be as common as it is here because it is much too hot to have the oven on. The cookies would have to be bought at a store as well. Punch could be made in the back yard using oranges from the trees outside. Instead of spending Christmas day toboganning or trying out new skis. we could go to the beach and try out a new surf board. if we lived in Hawaii. Songs in the south would be very different as well, Bing Crosby's song would go something like ••1'm dream. ing of a warm Christmas - and Jingle Bells would be similar to "Dashing through the grass, in a one horse open b©PPy DOnhdcaay if you know of anyone who will be celebrating their birth- day soon. please send their name, age and birthday to: The Huron Expositor. There would be a lot of differences. but the whole idea of sharing. love and the happiness would be there no matter what part of the world you lived in. Of course Santa Claus has to adjust to both climates and dress according - h. A special thanks goes to the group of people who helped me think of some differences.
