' If you can recall last year about this time the league headed to Vanastra to play Some matches. The .results were That the low scores and close games were ,forgotten and the league suffered through an inflationary goal• %coring extravaganza that did not ,.ase up one tiny bit for the remainder of the year. Last weekend the league moved to Huron Park and l xetcr and the result was just about the same. The teams' tossed caution to the wind and exploded for 73 goals in the. .six games,. A number of no-shows shinnied team rosters and that contributed greatly to the flood. PENGUINS 11 HAWKS2 1 he Penguins started the weekend bonanza by ripping the desperate Hawks 11.2 in Huron Park. The early game was never close as the Pens rolled unobstructed over the' passive Hawks who spent most of the evening in their ass n end and under the constant pressure of a heavy I'en attack. Mike Marion paced the Penguins by netting 3 goals. ( .nn Holland. Kevin Bennett and Ray Seoines all had two goals each for the winners with Bob Schenck chipping in a single ,.core. Bob Chesney and John Jan meat replied for the Huss ks. RANGERS 7 CANADIANS 2 I he Canadians were miss- ing several skaters and they pard the price by succumbing 2 10 the Rangers. 1 he blue shirts took advan- tage of the situation to gain an easy win. Mike Flanigan and Kevin Coyne led the flourishing Ranger attack by tallying 2 goals each. Singles went to Two divisions . Continued from page 12 required in connection with the nates. FLYERS 112 BRUINS 2 The Flyers benefitted the most last Friday night when they face u Bruin team that produced only ' men. The Orange men rolled to an overpowering 12-2 triumph. ne has to give credit where credit is due. The Bruins who showed up did show courage but were simply overmatched by the Flyers. Dave Broome scored 5 times for the winners. Terry Craig added 4 goals with Bill O'Shea. Rick Dalrymple and Steve Smith adding single markers. Brian Nigh and Terry Ste- phenson did manage to con- nect for the Bears. BRUINS 9 CANADIANS 5 fhe Bears rebounded nice- ly in Exeter on Saturday, afternoon by thumping the fading Canadians by a 9-5 count. The Bruins were at full strength and in command all the way. Ron Hildebrand helped his team vanquish the Canucks by scoring 3 goals in just 45 seconds which is just an incredible feat because the league plays straight -time hockey. In addition to Hildebrand's outburst. the Bruins got two scores from Brian Cooper and single goals from Terry Ste- phenson. Dale Kennedy, Jack Ungarian and Brian Nigh. The Canadians won their first outing of the season but it has been a calamity ever since. They have now dropp- ed 6 in a row and are the sole proprietors of last spot. Five different skaters shared the Canuck scoring duties. John Roberts, Jerry Feeney, Ron Quipp. Gary Finnigan and Dave Longstaff all netted singles. FLYERS 6 PENGUINS 3 O'Leary. The Flyers were the better team and outmanoeuvred the Pens most of the game. They overpowered the Penguins with persistent forechecking and worked goalie Gerry Martin hard with a number of good close -in drives, Dave Broome led the orange shirts by getting the hat trick. George Reeves added a pair of goals and Terry Craig notched a score also. Kevin Bennett, -Ken Swan and Mike Marion answered for, the Pens. It was the Flyers' sixth straight win and they now share first place with the Penguins. RANGERS 12 HAWKS 2, 0, The only obstacle prevent- ing the Hawks from crashing head first into the cellar is the Canadians. The Hawks bowed badly to the Rangers in game 3 to the tune of 12-2. What makes the wreckage of this latest disaster so ominous is the fact that the Rangers were missing four key players. - The blue shirts set down the Hawks early by erecting a 5-1 first period lead. Doug Phillips erupted for 5 goals and Kevin Coyne had•4 as both players combined for 14 points. Howie Breen had two with Jim Henderson chipping in a single tally for good measure. Bob Chesney and Jerome Aubin popped a couple of token tallies for the Hawks. I.H.L. notes: Ron Hilde- brand's 3 goals in 45 seconds is no doubt the fastest that feat has ever been perform - ed. With straight time, 45 seconds would just about be the limit. The Flyers scored 8' secondrs, into the game against the Bruins Friday Martin Feeney, Brad Beut- tenmiRer, Rick MacLean, Scan Cook. The LH.L. will play one more night in Huron Park (this Saturday/ before moving into our new arena. The officiating has been awful and, at times, down- rieht pathetic. One example last Saturday occurred when Bill O'Shea lifted an oppon- ent's stick and took the puck away. The ref blew the play • dead and gave O'Shea an interference penalty. That was the most stupid call 1 have witnessed in some time, A lot of people complain and whine about the state of hockey but the officiating is a lot worse at every level of the game.
