Ti Grace and Walter Forbes Operation was a lucky break BY SHELLEY McPHEE It's lucky that Walter Forbes had an appendicities attack. Working in Windsor as a tinsmith at the time. the year was 1925, Walter was rushed. home to Clinton hospital where he underwent surgery to remove the inflamed ap- pendix. The operation was a suc- cess, and when he awoke, Walter was to meet his Florence Nightingale, the girl of dreams. and today his wife of 50 years. Walter and the former Grace Churchill were only raised a few miles apart, he m Hullett Township, she in Goderich Township, but it wasn't until that day in the hospital until they met. Grace was a nurse in training at the time. She gaduated in 1928 and the following year went to port Huron. where the jobs were good and the wages high, and worked as a private nurse. In the meantime Walter - had recovered and was back at his job. The two renewed their friendship on the "Butter and Egg Special," the train home to Clinton. Then in July of 1932, on Grace's birthday, the propo- sal was made. "It was a leap year and she asked me," Walter chuckled. "1 never did. That was his excuse," she playfully reta- liated. Nevertheless, they became husband and wife on Nov- ember 5 of that year with a small wedding ceremony at St. Paul's Anglican Church in Clinton. Rev. McCowan officiated, Grace's sister Mabel McAdam was the maid of honor and Walter's late brother Neville was the best man.
