Prob- ably lots of times you were sincerely happy. Perhaps you received word that yon are an aunt or uncle of a small ncw,born baby. or that a friend is engaged, or a brother or sister got a .new job. Maybe receiving a letter from a relative or old friend made you happy. If you're a high school student. passing that English or math test would make you happy, especially if you did well. What really makes us happy? Happiness is chatting with an elderly lady on the street V AND AROUND WE GO—Jim McNichol and Dianne Wilson of the Junior Farmers seemed to be enjoying themselves at the Barn Dance Tuesday evening at the High School. About 30 enjoyed dances, called by Debbie Henderson,'Debbie Hulley and Trish Rimmer. Steve Steinman organized the event which. included skits, games and a chance to meet new people. (Photo by Hook) Manor enjoys singers The Friendship Circle of First Presbytdrian Church visited at Spaforth Manor on October 4 and presented a very entertaining program for the residents. In charge were Hazel Hildebrand and Joan Wood. Carol Carter accom- panied at the piano' for the musical part of the program and also sang with three daughters Joanne, Janice and Julie. Birthdays of the month were celebrated and the lucky recipients were Penny Caza and Lenny Bloomfield. Each received a gift and a cake and everyone sang Happy Birth- day. Charles Ross thanked everyone for the very nice evening and lunch. The first euchre of the season w s held on Tuesday afternoon ctober Sth, with five tables in Prizes were donated by Mrs. Mary Mclver and lunch by Mrs. Cassie Nicholson. On Wednesday afternoon October 6th Rev. J. Vanslyke held special Thanksgiving communion at Seaforth Man- or Mrs, Sarah Elliott presid- ed at the piano for the hymns. Last Thursday afternoon Jackie Racho and Mary Fin- layson accompanied a num- ber of residents to the social at Vanastra Recreation Cent- ' re. Church service was con- ducted 'last Wednesday after- noon by David McKnight of Egmopdville United Church. This, was our Thanksgiving service and also special tri- bute was paid to the memory of the late Cecil Rhoades and the group sang one of his favourite songs. Mrs. Shirley Luther visited last Friday afternoon and presented a lovely service in voice and song. Shirley is also a gifted pianist and residents love to hear her play and sing along the hymns they know best. PERSONALS Mr. Frank Case enjoyed an outing with Miss Ruth Cluff. Mr. and Mrs. James Ste- wart visited with Mr. William Scott. Mr. George Addison visit- ed on Monday afternoon with Mr, and Mrs. Robert Mc- Clure. • Mrs. Ruth Noll spent the weekend at her home in Palmerston. Mrs. Glady's Ruston spent the weekend at her home with her family. Alley Bowling has started for the fall season. High bowlers. this week were Len Bloomfield with 185 and Gladys Ruston 158. Last Thursday was the start of wheel chair bowling with Junior Volunteers from Mrs. Thomas class assisting. Eliz- abeth. Jason andBill did very well in assisting the residents`i to bowl and we look forward to them returning next week or three other Classmates. Residents have been very busy lately trying to complete articles for the bazaar. Nov- ember 6. We miss Mary Neville for her beautiful knitt- ing but everyone is putting forth a good effort and any donations will be gratefully accepted. We are also plan- ning to have a draw again this year. and 'promising to visit her soon and then keeping that promise. Happiness is 'smiling at someone just for the -sake of smiling and making them happy. Happi- ness is staking a cat purr after a hard day's work. Happiness is making a baby smile and coo, Happiness is every day interactions' with friends and relatives. • Happiness is working really hard on something and getting that feeling of• ac- complishment when it is finished. Happiness is feeling Anteer m i, t �•,rucefice On October 12, tiftee volunteer mothers arrived a Huron Centennial School t begin six weeks of valuabl service in grades one to three They will assist a total o 37-40 pupils in the mathe matics and language area and also help out with pre school story hour and fiel trips. Each volunteer will help 3 or 4 students one day a week between opening exer- cises and recess, returning in spring for another six we6k period. These people are a valuable addition to the staff and their assistance is appre- ciated. Parents, pupils, farmer pupils and teachers enjoyed a very successful Open House on October 7 when well over 75 per cent of students and their families visited the school. Teachers look forward to meeting the parents again November 23 and 24 for interviews. Dental brushing with fluor- ide will take place in the school Oetober 20, 21 'and 22nd. then on Friday, Octo- ber 22 the photographer will capture the sparkling smiles on film. As the first Sunday in October is recognized as World -Wide communion the local churches in the area celebrated Communion to- gether. Rev. Duke planned to bring communion to Kilbar- chan which we appreciated very much. Rev. Duke made the com- munion service very real to us.'He read the first commun- ion in which Jesus administ- ered the first to his disciples . A long-timefrieed of Anna Hoegy visited at Kilbarchan. 1 though 1 already had my last rose of summer. Yester- day Claire Reith brought me two beautiful roses from his garden. with my tablemates. One is that deep rich red and the other especially large, white edged with pink. For this late in the year they are truly thrilling. Clair brings my church calendar of First Church on Sunday, He said he was going to check his roses for buds. I thought 0 yes? So. i was surprised when he came in with two breath- taking buds almost out. To- day they are almost in full bloom.' on the afternoon of Friday, October 29. The students' council has planned an enjoy- able afternoon with costume parades for everyone. a dance for grades 6-8 and cartoons in the gym. Cross Country team was - again successful this year placing second out of seven participating schools. Over 70 runners practised regularly all fall for the meet. Winning teams were the Sr. Girls, Debbie Harnett, Lonnie Simpson, Martha Hook, Colleen Cluff. Sr. Boys Scott Townsend, Bob Grune- wald, Jamie Sauve, Kevin Bender, Darin McKenzie. Midget Boys • Jon Lepping- ton, Jason McCarthy, Dean Martin, Chad McCarthy, Darryn McAsh. Individual winners were Debbie Harnett in the Sr. girls, Shawn McCarthy Inter- mediate boys and Dean Mar- tin. Midget boys. Dean won the Midget 10 and uncle.- division, since he started competing -three years ago in grade four. nil©W make you happy? that no matter what happens, nothing can go wrong. HELPING Happiness . is ' helping someone with a problem or assignment that. is causing them stress. Happiness is hearing that thank you when the problem is solved. Hap- piness is helping a child learn to ride a bicycle and watching her struggle down the street, smiling all the way because she has learned something that is very important. The things that make a child happy are very simple, yet so important. Happiness is tying your shoe for' the first time after . ninny days of practise. Hap- piness is staking the school basketball team. Happiness is being able to spell your name correctly with your neatest printing. Happiness is getting praise from a parent or teacher for some- thing that you worked hard on. Happiness is taking your dog for a walk, smiling at the little girl next door, saving your money to buy a bubble guns. catching snowflakes with your tongue, minding a snowman, tramping through mud puddles on a wet, spring day, picking flowers for your mother or neighbour, going fishing with a friend or brother, singing a song or whistling a tune, jumping in leaves and havinga friend, DIFFERENT For parents, things 'that make them happy arc differ- ent. Happiness is watching your -baby smile for the first time, watching hint play in his, food, hold his hand as he takes that first, step, dressing your baby up, taking hint places and showing hint off, having your child behave just the way he should, watching him grow up into the spitting image of his father and spoiling him every once in a while just to see hint smile. Happiness is being a parent. Happiness for a studcut again is different frori'i the others. Happiness is doing the best that you can and passing with flying colours. Happiness is deciding where you are going and what you world like to do in the future.
