Plans presented by Goderich architect and planner, Nicholas Hill proposed that orna- mental trees be planted in front of the liquor store, on two side of the library and along side of the,Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce and Stewart Pharmacy. Reeve Cal Krauter noted the horticultural society` has tended to flower beds at the 'library for the past several years. He said the society should be contacted and meet with council to discuss whether trees would be suitable at the library, Purchasing several ornamental trees would be alarge expenditure. Guesstimates ranged from $25 each and up. Councillor Gordon Workman felt the village shouldn't spend any money on trees. Noting the 1982 budget did not allow for many extras, Mr. Workman suggested "getting some nice trees from a bush and replanting." Councillor Hank Ten Pas said, "we should purchase trees that will be nicely bushed and ._ are going to make an attractive tree someday." Clerk Bill King suggested council purchase trees for the liquor store area "and see what they look like_next year.•' The village will receive approximately 100 trees from Huron County next spring. These will be for residents who wish to tree plant and for other areas in the village. DAM DETERIORATES Council reviewed the annual report of the executive meeting of the Maitland Valley Conservation Authority. The past years have seen the dam and mill pond in the village deteriorateto the point of imminent collapse. A councillor mentioned that in two years there won't be a dans. Reeve Krauter said a W intario grant is not available to fix the dam because tax money, cannot be used, The grant . only provides funds when money is raised through canvassing or donations. "We sit here and every year the dam gets worse". said councillor Workman. Councillor Stu Parker suggested the clerk send a letter to the authority "requesting a date when the dam will be repaired." WATER, WATER EVERYWHERE Councillor Ten Pas explained a water problem at the George Alexander property. He said the problem stems from a catch basin, east of the property, a pipe goes west and then back into the Alexander basement. "A 10 inch pipe goes into the cellar and doesn't seem to go anywhere else." Town works employee, Dave'Hastings said the pipe has to be unhooked, "but who is responsible? He (Mr. Alexander) is under the, impression the village should pay the cost." Councillor Workman said if "Mr. Alexander wants to shut it off, then he can at his expense." Reeve -Krauter explained, "He has the water problem, so he has to fix it." Councillor • Betty Graber agreed, "Anybgq#$, who has water in their basement, it's their own problem." COUNCIL SHORTS In other news, council approved 10 building permits for: Jane Badley, new garage and family room; Tom Pletch, family room and kitchen; Rob Demaray, replace old porch; Gerald McArter, new porch; Ruth Hinton, extend new roof over old roof; ida Evans, new siding; George Alexander, new verandah and roof; Cliff Apel, storage shed; Wayne Lowe, two new windows and siding, Lorne Brown, partial new roof. Dave Hastings noted that 1982 building permits total $77,810. No new houses were built this year. Paving for the 1982 season has been completed by Lavis Contracting. Budgeted was 520,000. Cost for the paving was 519,514. Secretary for the Brussels volunteer fire department, Harold Bridge, requested an itemized statement from council for the year. The clerk said receipts for donations for the new firctruck'are being rewritten and will be delivered by the firemen.
