A cake was cut during the meeting by past presidents of the UCW. Past presidents • .. include: Lavine Barry, Elsie Elliott, Jean Henderson, Grace Broadfoot, first president, Anne Walters, Beatrice Stoll, 1982 president, Joyce Wilson and Marjorie Broadtfoot. Mrs. Hugh Berry attended a Smith reunion at the 'home of her niece Mrs. Govieve Griffith, Stratford over the ' weekend, Visiting with Mrs. Berry on Monday were Mrs. Gordon Elliott, London and her daughter Mrs, Gaye Rodvald, children from Min- neapolis, Minnesota. M'rs. Hazel McNaughton in charge of the worship compared the join- ing of the W.A. and W.M.S, as two streams merging. Mrs. Maxine Broadfoot, Mrs. Jean Henderson and Mrs. Edna Paterson assisted in tracing the roots 'of the societies and told of the on going work of the church. In 1960 General Council passed a motion to form the Varna grads honoured Correspondent a W.D. Fair Scholarship for MARY CHESSELL general proficiency in grade 482.9969.2. Laura Hill, formerly of Michael Coleman, son of Varna, received the Bank of Jack and Eleanor Coleman Moraval Secretarial Award and grandson of Leonard Prang of Zurich and Mr. and Mrs. Harry Baker of Bay- field, gave the valedictory address at the Commence- ment Exercises at Central Huron Secondary School in Clinton on October 1. The Carter Scholarship was awarded to Michael for achieving one of the' highest grade 13 averages in Huron County. Other awards he received were the Sir Ernest Cooper Estate Scholarship and a W.D. Fair Scholarship for general proficiency, the E.A. Fines Award for Mathemat- ics and W.D. Fair Scholar- ships for two Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics, and an Ontario Scholarship. Michael is now enrolled in the engineering program at the University of Waterloo. Tpm McBride received Pre Epps Pump Award for Mechanical Technology in grade 11. Terry Brandon won the Dr. Palmer Award for grade 12 Geography, and Sandra Coleman the E.B. Menzies History Award and STUDENT PASTOR—Don Moffatt assumed pastoral duties at the Brucefield and Kippen United Churches commencing August 1. Originally from the Chatham area, Mr. Moffatt has been church organist at the Parkview United Church, Stratford for the past two years. A student pastor is a first for the Brucefield church. Mr. Moffatt was hired on a yearly contract and will complete schooling within four years when he will be ordained. Lawrence Keys and Mich- ael Coleman received their Honours Diploma. Graduat- ion Diplomas (grade 12) went to Terry Brandon, Sandra Coleman, Laura Hill, Jini Postma, Larry Taman and Cathy Taylor. Many area people spent a day at the Plowing Match before their land was dry enough to start on the corn and beans. Now that beauti- ful weather has settled in, they're "hard al it." Ivan and Irene Smith of Toronto, who always spend a at least a day at the International Plowing Match. visited with the Chessels for a couple of days and accom• panied us to the big show. The weather and signs to look for when predicting the weather were discussed as well as folk forcasts. Kites acre made with the leaders' help and wcrc to he finished at home. An over night camping trip was plan- ned so that everyone was sure what to bring. Information on acather forcasting and kite safety -1.j. as reviewed and the meeting adjourned Lunch was served. Campout for -the club was held on Sept. 24 and 25 at Kinsman's sugar bush. This involved carrying the equip- ment into the clearing and setting up the tents. A fire was started and the marsh- mallows roasted in spite of the rain. It was discovered that some slrrpinK hags were camp soaked while others were nicely dampened. It roared all night and it Was decided to havcanother meeting to fin• ish the book work, It was decided to go home, pack up the tents, only one of which han't leaked or caved in, return to the road to be picked up and brought home. Mrs. Mar- jorie Broadfoot gave the treasurer's report and Mrs. Barbara Moffat read a letter from the foster child. Mrs. Isabel Scott read the corre- spondence. LADY VISIITS IN WEST Mrs. Laird Mickle return- ed home last Friday evening after a pleasant two week holiday visiting her cousins in and around Pilot Mound and Snowflake, Manitoba. Her two daughter, Mrs. Ross MacMillan and Mrs, Brian Collins, both from Waterloo flew out to Winni- peg with her and from there drove by car which ,is over 120 miles. They spent the weekend arriving back home on the Monday evening. Mary Salayka of Windsor spent several days visiting. with her cousin ,Mrs. Anita Bengough. The Three Links Seniors and friends from Hensall enjoyed a bus trip to Cullen Gardens at Whitby on Tues- day and the weatherman co-operated which made the trip worthwhile, World Wide Communion Sunday was observed al the United Church on Sunday morning with an excellent attendance. Those helping with the communion service were: assisting the minister Irene Davis and Grace Drummond. Serving the congregation were Lloyd Ferguson, Harold Parsons, Alf Ross, Barbara Gackstet- ter, Steve Corbett. Joyce Pepper and Hilda Payne. Mr. McDonald spoke on "Why Are We Here" and gave the different ways one prepares for receiving com- munion. Shirley Luther was soloist with Eric Luther at the piano. Mary Moffatt was the organist. Ushers for the day were Chuck. Doxtator, Ray, Jacobi, John Rowcliffe and Harry \ Stuart greeted the congregation. The flowers at the front of the church were placed in loving memory of Mrs. Helen Petrie. Mrs. Grace Drummond and Rev, McDonald attended the Huron -Perth Presbytery of the United Church which met in Sebringville on Tues- day. Mr. and Mrs, Wes Rich- ardson of Goderich visited with relatives and friends in and around the village last week. CELEBRATES BIRTHDAY A birthday party was held for Mrs. Elizabeth Riley, Hensall, on Sunday at the home of Allan and Marylin Riley, Exeter. The gift of a living -room carpet was presented to Mrs. Riley by all her family. This was followed by a family dinner.
