Bible society celebrates 50

The annual meeting of the
Gorrie and area Branch of the
Canadian Bible Society was
held at the home of Mrs. Ruth
Galbraith.
Rev. Howlett from the
London District Office gave
some information about the
Bible Society's work.
This year the Bible Society
celebrates 50 years of service.
It has made over 700 transla-
tions. The Canadian Pres.
Dr. MacMillan retires in
March. Rev. Wm. Russell
from Montreal is to be his
successor,
The Bible Society does not
go into countries without a
permit. Even China and Rus-
sia have given their permis-
sion.
The Bible is very much in
-demand especially in African
countries.
Rev. Howlett showed a film
of the work of the Australian
Bible Society in the South
Pacific.
Mrs. Alex Taylor succeeds
Mrs. Bill Smith as treasurer.
This years canvass is to be
held in October. The canvas-

Suddenly on Sept. 20 Brian
Edward Newton of Wroxeter
died in his 32nd year. He was
the son of Mrs. Ila Newton
and the late Mr. Mac Newton.
He is survived by his
sisters. Mrs. Greg (Beverley)
Smart of Kamloops, B.C. and
Mrs. Dan (Linda) Galvin of
Calgary. Alta. and a niece
and two nephews. He was a
grandson of Mrs. Alice New-
ton, Wingham.
Funeral services were con•
ducted by Canon 0. Laramie
on Sept. 24 at Watts Funeral
Home, Gorrie. Interment fol-
lowed in Wroxeter Cemetery.

The Church in Society was
the theme when the Gorrie
United Church Women met
in the Church Hall,
The devotional period was
given by Mrs. A.L. Stephens
and Mrs. Alex Taylor. Mrs.
Stephens read passages from
the Book of Job, and gave a -
commentary on Job's quest•
ion, and ours, "Why does a
good man suffer?" God's
immeasurable power and the
reasons for His decisions are
.quite beyond our comprehen•
sion, but God tested Job's
loyalty and in the end gave
back to him much more
than he had lost.
Mrs. -Taylor brought for-
ward some of the issues
which the Church is concern•
cd about in modern society.
such as land use, penal
reform, divorce and abortion,
pollution and the environ•
ment and disarmament.
Mrs, Robert Gibson gave a
reading on the subject of
diligent Bible study. The
president, Mrs. Norman Fair -
les • was in charge of the
business.
Substantial amounts were
voted to the Mission, and
Service Fund, and to the
Board of Stewards. Members
were reminded of the Fall
Bale to be packed on October
27th, -the fowl supper on
November 3 and the bazaar
on November 27. The Fall
Regional Rally is. to be held in
Brussels on October 13. Mrs.
Sheldon Mann was pianist for
the meeting and the offering
was received by Mrs. Wesley
Ball and Mrs. Murray Hay-
den.
WYLIE-HAWKINS
On August 21, at the
Presbyterian Church, Thed-
ford, Janice Lee Hawkins and
James Timothy Wylie were
united in marriage. Rev,
Venus Bibawi officiated. Jan•
ice is the daughter of Lee and
Corrinne Hawkins, Thedford
and Timothy is the son of
James and Fern Wylie, Gor-
rie.
The matron of honour was
Libby Dollar Smithson, Lon•
don, a friend of the bride and
the bridesmaids were Mela-
nie Hayter, Parkhill, 'and
Cathy Sharpe. Thedford,
both cousins of the bride.
The best man was Clarke
Hyndman', Elmira, a friend of
the groom ' and the ushers
were Dennis Hawkins, Lon-
don. brother of the bride and
Stephen Wylie, Hamilton,
brother of the groom.
The candles were lit by Tim
Hawkins, Thedford, brother
of the bride and Mark Steed-
man, Mississauga, a cousin
of the groom.
Wedding music was p o-
vided by Mrs. Agnes Davi •
son, Thedford.
Following the wedding a
dinner and dance was held at
the Thedford Community
Centre.
The couple will reside in ,
Hamilton where the groom
will be attending Mohawk
College. -

411th wedding anniversary.
Garner and Alice were
married on October 31. 1942
at the Brussels United
Church manse by the Rev.
Hugh Wilson who had just
recently moved with his fam-
ily front Westfield. Their

Ernest Crawford of Goderich
who were present at the open
house.
