B2 — THE HURON EXPOSITOR, OCTOBER 6, 1982
Short Shots by Evelyn Kennedy ssels Post
A happy holiday with my Winnipeg family
is over so here are a few bits and pieces'about
that pleasant city: Every street in the
residential sections are lined on both sides
with graceful elm trees. On two-way streets
the wide boulevards that separate the traffic
lanes also have elm trees. Nowhere was seen
a maple. When I left the elms were already
turning yellow and had began carpeting the
streets with their leaves. Many front lawns.
where there was sufficient space, had spruce
trees and shrubs and some the lovely
weeping birch.
There are many parks in this city, a number
with recreational facilities. Assiniboine Park
is very Targe, well kept, with seats scattered
about for those who take advantage of this
vast green expanse provided for them in the
very heart of the city.
Here too you will find an English Garden,
There is a continuous bed of flowers of every
kind and size from pansies to dozens of
varieties of roses to tall stately lilies, all with
name plates, A paved walk winds along the
edge of the display,of flowers. Although frost •
had 'nipped some of them there was still much
floral beauty to admire.
There, also, was the Assiniboine Zoo, well
, maintained with excellent accommodation for
birds and animals who seemed in good
condition and content. This zoo covers a large
area. In one part are birds and small animals
also here may be seen a grizzly bear and polar
bears. one the mother with cubs. One of the
most amusing of the animals that attracted a
great deal of attention was a colony of cute
little prairie dogs busily digging into the
ground. Of course there were the ever,
popular monkeys. In another area are the -
large animals, bison, camels, etc.
This zoo, unlike most others, is absolutely'
free to the public, Jt is maintained by the city,
assisted by donations made by appreciative
people. Anyone can come to enjoy the
animals and birds or simply for a quiet stroll
in clean, pleasant surroundings. 'r'

Reading about the CBC's television movie,
"The Chataugua Girl" (based on the early
days of Chautauga in the western provinces)
bei,ng filmed in southern Alberta brought
remembrance of the days when Chautaugua
group cane to Brussels, not in a tent as in
the west but to our old Town Hall. That was in
long years agone, when only a teenager. The
days of no television and not many radios. It
was not low -brow, tacky, hoop la programs
they brought to us. Thete were excellent
performances with ,plays. singers, and
musicians. often with numbers from such
operas as Madam Butterfly, classical pianists
and always a special speaker to tell us about
places, people and things we never would see
and seldom read about. I vividly recall one
lady talking about pineapples in her native
land. She told us that the ones we got were
greenq. they had to be for shipping, but in her
homeland they were left to ripen; in the sun
until the juice began ozing out. They were
then sweet and lucious, as we never knowf•
them. There was always an attractive young
lady who came as an advance agent to put up
posiers and collect a fee from the local
Chautaugua committee before the troupe
arrived. One such lady was very friendly and
tried to interest me in becoming an advance
agent. At that age there was no desire to
leave home, and travel `around from day to
day.
Ralph Nader. who has spent many years
critically stirring up corporate"America, was a
recent visitor in Toronto. While there he did
not hesitate to give Canadians some outspok-
en advice about what Canada should do
regarding the United States, "Freeze the
U.S. for a few years. Give them the China
treatment", he said. Nader has come to the
conclusion that the Regan administration is
the least friendly to Canada since the Second
World War. He stated their reaction to
Ottawa's attempt to limit American invest-
ment and oil industry in Canada is "How dare
they". Nader's comments about Canadians.
in a book he assisted in wr ting, was "they
have -to shed the idea that tFy can't run their
own country". He als2' said "Although
nationalization could mean more economic
suffering for Canadians short-term pain is
necessary for long -terns gain". Agreement
with Nader is easy when he tells us we should
run our own country, Why should Canada
subrnit.to be told by the U.S„ or any ocher
country. what must, or what must not he
done, about our own affairs. Other remarks
by Nadar shows him a, believer in P.M.
Trudcau and what he is trying to do.
Agreement with that is a difficult
problem in some cases.
THE DANCERS
Dancing, twirling, their skirts held high.
Twisting. fluttering down from the sky.
Showing their colours all red. rust and gold
Telling us summer is now getting- old.
Pivoting. rustling around in the breeze,
September's the stage for the "dance of the
leaves."
