(Wassink photo) S kpcwW0 Peewees eliminated The season just ended Labour Day weekend for the Seaforth Peewees in Ontario Baseball Plavdow'ns. The team ended on a losing note; bowing out in two straight gantes'to Thorold in the final series. Reaching the. final series and ending up being the second best team was no mean teat. The season started with only four players registered and the first two league games having to be post- poned. Enough players were finally gathered and the team suffered through some close losses to Goderich and Exeter before starting to gain exper- ience in baseball and show their ability. All of theplayers shared a common back- ground in that they had no baseball experience. Most had played fastball last sea- son, The team scored impres- sive wins over Wingham and Clinton and some close rfect. .GG gai@@no by C i1©O@Eifn G) Doig The hours of practice and dedication paid off for tan Doig on Saturday as he became the 11th winner of the Annual Seaforth Golf and Country Club's Men's Invita- 'tion Tournament. The • 21 year-old son of Seaforth's Ken Doig, carried on the family tradition and became the third Doig name to go on the Commercial Hotel trophy for the low gross winner. This win ended a fine season for Ian as he had already won several other events. includ- ing the local club champion- ship. ran fired an 8 under par 64 on Saturday to defeat a field of 124 golfers from all over Canada. the U.S. and Bermuda and Norway. The competition was close when after the front nine both Ian and defendipg champion Rick Enfield of St. Mary's had tied the course record by firing sizzling scores of 29! Ian managed to keep it going on the back and finished with a 35 and a two shot victory. Pete Hutchison from Huron Oaks in Sarnia shot a hot 33 on the back nine. in a round that included 3 eagles. to come within tieing distance of Ian. but the young Seaforth golfer kept his cool and finished ahead of the pack. Joe Walsh of St. Marys had a low net of 62 to win the Shorty Munro trophy for low net over the field. Low Bermudian, a special award presented each year. went`o Eddie Marshall who had B fine round of 75. Eddie's young son Chris was the low Bermudian in our Junior tournament already this sum• mer. It was a fine day as the golfers played 18 holes. some golfers teeing it up as early as 7:52 a.m, in order to get all the players around the 9 hole course twice. It was by far the best turnout ever. with golf- ers participating from all over. Entries have already been accepted for next years' event. In late July they were matched with Exeter for all -Ontario OBA playdowns. Ser -forth won the first game of a best of three series in Exeter handily by a 10-2 score. The game featured strong pitching from David Akey and strong offence from all players. The second game in Seaforth was a one run win by Exeter in an exciting game, Seaforth managed a one run victory in Exeter the next game and thus elimi- nated Exeter who had a very strong well-balanced team, Seaforth th,•n played Shel- burne and defeated them two straight after losing the first game. That series was high• lighted by the consistent play of Darren Akey, Ray Little and Trevor Fortune as well a as well as strong pitching from David Akey and timely hitting from Chris Smith, Dwain Osborne and Pat Mur- ray, Mike Betties returned from vacation and made his presence felt with good field- ing in the outfield in this series to strengthen the team. 1 TEAM EFFORT The Peewees then tackled Stiathroy and won the. first game in Strathroy 5-4 with a good team effort. Strathroy won the second game back in Seaforth forcing, a deciding game in Strathroy. David Akey struck out 11 and Kevin Cooper's hat came alive with a double, triple and single to lead the offence vthich saw Seaforth win the series with an I I.5 win. Seaforth then faced McGregor, a small town in baseball country, Windsor. McGregor was an, excellent team featuring good balance at both offence and defence. They won the first game handily in McGregor and the game teas played very ner- vously by Seaforth, PITCHING CONTEST The second game in Sea - forth was a pitc,hing contest featuring fine pitching by both David Akey for Seaforth' and Kirchner for McGregor. Pat Murray stole home in the bottom of the seventh inning to score the winning run in an exciting 4-3 Seaforth win. McGregor returned to Sea - forth for the third and decid- ing game and fine pitching again by David Akey and timely hitting by Darren Akey, the team's most con- sistent player, Kevin Cooper, Pat Murray and Dave Akey allowed Seaforth to win the game 6.4 and win the series. That put them into the OBA All Ontario final. McGregor was a very fine team, well behaved and a credit to their town. Seaforth played Thorold next and the first game was won in Seaforth by Thorold. The score was a very close one run game with Seaforth playing nervously. The bubble burst in Thorold the next game as the team was outplayed by Thorold in their hone park. The pressure was • telling as Seaforth was unable to answer the final challenge: The season however was an enormous success and shows that next year the Peewees will have good players, like Dwayne Price, Gord O'Dwyer Trevor Fortune, Chris Smith and Darren Akey returning to make a strong nucleus for another good season, Players like Danny Pri- meau, Dwain Osborne, Ray Little, Pat Murray, Mike Betties, Kevin Cooper, Chris Anderson, and David Akey will he moving up to Bantam to make that team even stronger.
