A Provincial and Federal
A and Federal
Government sponsored de-
monstration project to heat
greenhouses with wood
waste instead of oil was
officially opened ' -
Robert Bell industries of
Seaforth made boiler com-
ponents for the project.
Foothill Greenhouses Ltd..
located in the Holland Marsh
arca near Brsdford. Ontario.
is owned and operated by
Bob and Ron Vourberg, who
grow two crops of seedless
cucumbers yearly in 1'h
acres of greenhouses. '
As chairman of the Ontario
Greenhouse Vegetable
Growers' Marketing Board.
Bob Vourberg is well aware
of the difficulties facing
Ontario greenhouse growers:
-high fuel costs. • adverse
weather conditions, -low
priced imports.
There Is grave concern for
the future of greenhouse
growers because of escalat-
ing energy costs, which
presently amount to almost
35 percent of operating costs.
The new system is expect-
ed to reduce cncrg) costs by
about 60 percent when using
dry wood residues (sawdust)
it place of oil. The estimated
saving in fuel costs is as
much as 530.000 per year.
This project, while having
pruvince•widc application, is
aimed primarily at relieving
the Holland Marsh green•
houses' dependency on nil
(natural gas has not been
distributed to farmers in this

570.000.
Under the terms of the
agreement, tours will be
conducted through the faci-
lity and. information on the
project will be distributed to
other enterprises likely to
benefit from such conservat-
ion. It is the first facility of its
kind in Ontario. The system
will be monitored for 6
months, and an evaluation
report of•the project will be
published.
Each year. the boiler heat-
ing system will burn 1.200
tons of wood chips and
sawdust. The Voorberg's
now spend S30 a ton for A•w
wood chips, compared to
about 560 for an equal
amount of bunker oil. Plans
arc now under way to secure
a 5 -year contract for fine
sawdust from a local source.
Sawdust is stored in a 10.000
cubic foot silo. adjacent to
the boilerhouse. This is a
sufficient fuel supply for 8 to
10 days. The fully automated
system is controlled by a
microprocessor, which moni-
tors the greenhouse temper,
ature. A drop in temperature
activates valves which re•
lease steam into the heating
system. When the pressure
in the boiler drops. the
automatic fuelling of sawdust
from the silo into the boiler is
activated, Eventually. • the
microprocessor will monitor
the air vents, temperature,
humidits , and carbon dioxide
in the greenhouse
As there arc large quantit•
fes of w,xsd waste asailable
throughout Onano. it has
tremendous potential as an
altcrnatise fuel. Hopefully.
this protect 55111 prove to be a
reliable sso,+d residue burn-
ing ss stem that will fall
within the capital casts re•
straints of medium -sire
greenhouse operations and
help reduce out dependency
