Shoppers in Hensall last week, during the successful Moonlight Madness sale may have noticed several old sale' bills and dance posters. The posters were found • by a Hensall resident when clean- ing out a shed. They were green to J -anis Bisback, pro- prietor of Church House Antiques who in turn display- ed the posters at the recent "madness" sale. The 60 posters feature dances, auction sales and political gatherings, ranging from 1936 to 1954. Printediat the bottom of each is "Print- ed by the Hensall Print Shop". One poster featured a dance at Watson's Hall, Kip - pen with general admission, 35 cents. Music at the De- cember 24, 1936 dance was supplied by the Canadian Cowboys and tfleir modern dance band. A dance at the Bayfield Pavilion featured Frank Kenny and his Hoozier Hot Shots. Admission was 25 cents, An'auction sale of interest was held November 16, 1948 for Wm. Pepper of lot six, concession three, Tucker - smith township. Listed for sale was a Co-op tractor on rubber,,, starter and lights in A-1 condition; Tedder; M.H. Hayloader; Mangels, Inthrow disc and a Hayfork. Contacting a Hensall resi- dent, it was learned the Hensall Print Shop was own- ed by George Hess during the 1930's, his and 50's. Origi- naUy from the west, Mr. Hess combined a jewellery store zand print shop in a location w owned by Drysdale Ap- pliances. Mr. Hess' purchased the printing equipment and busi- ness from Mr. Wickwire_who, published the,,.H'briiall Ob- server. The local newspaper was closed at that time. A local resident recalled that Fred Hess assisted his son in the store. George Hess passed away in the late 1950s or early 60's. It is presumed a daughter is living in Toronto.
