four pills a day and some of her hair fell out.
She had a vitamin pill every day too.
After four weeks' fast Marg was put on a
two week long re-ffeedi'ng program. Food
didn't taste as good as she had expected.
"I'd been dying for a cup of coffee. My first
meal was a coffee and an egg .... it tasted
terrible."
Understandably, her stomach refused
food for two days. Everything, had to be
mashed for easy digestion. She was feeling
weak and upset when her family came down
to visit "and just took over. It's surprising

a
when you're isolated and undergoing a
tough experience. With her family's help
Marg gradually started eating again.
She has interesting stories of fellow
patients who had more drastic weight loss
treatments. One man who weighed 475
pounds had reduced to 349. His, stomach,
.once the size off a football, was stapled to the
size of an egg. He'll eat small scoops of
mashed food for the rest of his life, "It's
that or death," Marg explains. -
Marg'9 roommate, the other patient who
stayed on the program, "took a year out of
her life" to lose weight. She lost 35 pounds
and het dress size went from 241/ to 18.
Other patients on the ward had rare
diseases; one teenager had a kidney
transplant. It made her realize, Marg says,
that's she's "so lucky to be living, have a
job and a family etc."
