The news was received here tbat Alex.
Leckie, son of Mrs, Leckie of town, had
died at Port Arthur on the 23rd ult.,
from pneumonia. It is three years since
Mr, Loekte had been in Blyth and he'
was well known, and highly eeteeemd by
all who knew him. Deceased was 20
years of age and Ieaves a mother, two
sisters and two brothers to mourn his
loss, The body was brought here and
interment made in Blyth cemetery last
Friday.

The treasurer's report showed a balance

Teeswater on their - wedding trip to
Points East, and on their return will

Mr. Wylie, who bas been RI for the

Knox Church on Sunday next at 11

Quarterly meeting was held in the
Methodist church last Sunday morning
but owing to the inclemency of the
weather only a few were present.
A concert will be given in the For -
resters' Hall on Feby 15th in aid of the
Hospital for Sick children in Toronto.

The ratepayers of U. S. S. No. 17,
Belgrave, met Wednesday of last week
and elected the following trustees:—D.
Sproat, Wm. Wightman and Robt Ma-
guire. They have secured a building
for the present andexpect to open the
school in a week or two.
On Tuesday evening of last week the
young men of the vicinity held a vary
enjoyable assembly here. Upwards of
sixty couples were present; music was
furnished by Allan Bros., of Harlock,
violinists ; Mra. J. L. Geddes, of 13e1 -
grave, pianist ; .J. Carter, Auburn, cor-
netist. A dainty repast was provided by
Mr. E. Moore of Wingham.
Oar popular station agent, Mr, D. Mc-
Gregor, haying been promoted to a much
more important station on the mean line
of tho G. T. R., his friends in Vie village
could not let him leave without in some
way showing that as a citizen and busi-
ness man, he had been appreciated. So
it was arranged to give him an oyster
supper on the evening of Jan. 31st, and
it was held in the dining room of the
Queen's hotel. The large dining room
was filled to he utmost capacity, every

The January session of the Huron
County Council was held in Goderich
the week commencing Jan 22nd.
R MoLean, H. Wilbert, John Leckie,
Pater Lamont and M. Y. McLean were
appointed a 'treeing committee to select
standing committees for the year,and T.
McMillan, D. Cantelon and Dr, Milne
were appointed a;oommittee to revise the

Two tenders for County printing were
received—from the Goderich Star and
Signal; that of the former being accept-
ed. The Sovereign Bank applied tor a
share of the County deposit, but ho ac-
tion was taken in the matter, $60 was
granted to to the National Sanitarium;
$20 to the Sick Chillren's hospital, To-
ronto; $15 to eaoh of the Pabile Librari-
es in' the connty; $20 to each of the
Agricultural and liortiettltttral societies
in the county, including the Huron Oen.

Hainstock, and carried, that on account
of the annual increased expenditure in
the county rate, the yearly expenditure
be confined to absolute necessities.

onded by W. Baillie, and carried , that
the special Committee be iustructed to
inquire into the best methods to be
adopted to enable the county to partici-
pate in the Ontario Good Roads appro-
priation: The Committee to prepare
diaft byelaw for submission to the muni-
cipal councils of the connty, for their
consideration, said by-law to be submitt-
ed to the County Council for its consid-
eration next June.
COUNTY ENGINEER'S REPORT.
The county engineer was asked to re-
port on the bridge on the boundary line
between West Wawanosh and Ashfield
on the third concession, known as Tay-
lor's bridge; on the bridge on tae bouai-
dary between Hay and Stanley, known
as Cochrane's bridge; on the bridge ou
the London road south of Brucefielcl
known as the McMillan bridge, with the
now of having the bridge rebuilt as
county bridge; on the bridge on the
Saublo line, Stanley, near Geo. Dewar's;
on the bridge on the boundary line be-
tween Colborne and West Wawanosh,
known as the McPhee bridge; on the
bridge on the boundary line between
Hallett and Goderich township, known
as the Rapson bridge; with a view t0
having the same rebuilt as a county
bridge; on the London road bridge a
mile south of Hensall; on the approach.

St. Mary's Collegiate Institute for ar-

to $500, as near as we can compute.
