Toughlove: parent support
Seaforth's newly formed Toughlove
parent community support group is meeting
weekly and there's a lot of interest,
according to Peg De Jong, who orgatfized
the local group.
"There were 11 at the first meeting. 16 at
the 'second. and more people phoned and
said they wanted to come but couldn't make
it," Mrs. De Jong says. •
Interested parents are meeting on
Monday evenings at Seaforth Public School.'
Recently a speaker came from the London
organization and in the fall the Seaforth
group hopes to have a local lawyer discuss
parents' and children's rights.
The following description of the Tough -
love philosophy is reprinted with the
permission of the Greensboro (North
Carolina) Self -Help Parent Group:
AN INTRODUCTION
Toughlove is a gathering of parents
troubled by their teenager's behavior. We
give support to each other during periods of
family crisis and we use the period of
non -crisis to learn. We draw from each
other's experiences and look at our own
situation in new lights.
WHAT WE ARE AND
WAAT WE ARE NOT:
We are a support group not a therapy
group.
We are a gathering of parents; our
children are not a dirqct part of this grOup.
We,deal in behavior: not emotions even
though emotions are quite evident and must
be considered and respected.
We do not act as professional counselors,
but we can recommend some good ones.
We have no affiliation with any religious
group.
We cannot give you a list of things to do to
make your kid into something' he or she is
not. What we can do is show that you are
not alone, that you have rights and worth.
and deserve to be treated with respect.
We can eiye no guarantees. We can give
suggestions, hope, and sharing.
There are no dues or fees, but we must
pay the rent. A small contribution from you
would be appreciated.
The only thing we ask of newcomers is
that you buy a manual. Not that we are
trying to sell manuals, but if you are -here
because of stress caused by your teenager
you need the manual whether you realize
that now or not. The cost is six dollars and
worth far more. We feel this is a must
because aside from being the best on the
subject, the manual helps us all to speak the
same language.
As you take part in Toughlove sessions,
please keep in mind these points:
11' If a group member offers a suggest.
ion that is wrong for your situation keep in
mind it is just that, a suggestion. There are
no set rules. You must choose what is right
for you and your family.
2) Our problems, names. and privacy, as
well as those of our children, .must be
protected outside of this group. Please
respect this.
3) You will hear ideas from Toughlove
that are probably different front any others
you may have heard. Please don't reject
them outright. The ideas are different, and
some are tough, but they do reflect love
toward your child.
4) There are..•some parents here with
major problems, aryl some with not -so -ma-
jor problems. Bra serious problem is used as
an illustration, it is not meant to belittle
someone else's minor problem. All are here
to learn and grow, and all have valid input to
the group. We welcome that input.
5) If you decide, at some point in the
future, that this group has helped you to be
more Comfortable in what is now an
uncomfortable situation, and you feel you
have no further need for this group, please
consider staying on awhile Icriager as a group
member, to return to others the help you
have received. That is the true value of a
support group such as Toughlove.
