Ross, barrister, of Strathroy, and gen of the ex -Premier of Ontario, has been nominated by the Libernia of We.t Middlesex to carry their standard in the constituency, so long and ably filled by hie illustrious father. The receipts of the Damiai3n post - office department for the seven months ending with tannery show as increase of $04,273 over the same time in the previous year. Total receipts for the past month. were $4,819,929. Increase for tho month of January, 1906, wag $249,teen. In reply to Mr. Graham, who asked if the Government were considering the question of amending the Local Option clauses by removing the three fifths clause, Premier Whitney said he bad been watching the results of the voting, and was satisfied that this con- dition bad proved successful and efficient in the working out of the Act, as it now stands. Tbe value of mineral output of Can - ads in 1966 was, says the Director of the Geological Survey, $6,0OO,003, and in 1903 it was t7d,CC0,(0O. The exact figures for 1906 are not yet available, but they will, the Director says, be in excess of those of last year. There has been during the year an active demand for asar1y ail mining prodgets, and the higher prices realized, especially for the mete and their ore% have not only help- ed to increase the actual output, but have stimulated development and ptos- pecbng throughout the country. The general. election in British Colum- bia, en Saturday last, resulted in an em- phatic endcrsation of the McBride Go. vernment, which is now somewhat stronger than in the last Legislature. To the Editor of the Tratgs:— Dear Sir,—At the meeting of theTown Canncii on Monday evening, the Chief Police made a statement in reply to my question reenforoin , the Liquor License Act, to the effect that an officer would be appointed in the near future, to enfore the provisions of this Act, provision having been made by the Ontario Government for the appoint- ment of such an officer, But I would respectfully draw his attention to the fact that thio action on the part of the Government does not in any way relieve him of any responsibility in the matter. Section 128, Liquor License Act pro- vides that "The license commissioners, with the sauction of the Lieutenant Governor inConncil, may appoint one or more officers to enforce the provisions of this Act," &c. Bat Sen. 129 provides that "Every officer so appointed under this Act, every policeman or constable or inspector shall be deemed to be with- in the provisions of this Act, " &o. Section 134 reads as follows: —"It shall be the duty of every officer, policeman, constable or inspector in each munici- pality, to see that the several provisions of this Act are duly observed, and to proceed by information and otherwise prosecute for the punishment of any offence against the provisions of this Act- Ard in case of wilful neglect or default in so doing in any case, such officer, policeman, constable or inspector shall incur a penalty of $10 00 besides costs for each and every such neglect and default," The Act also provides that "Any officer or policeman con- victed of violating the provisions of this section may be summarily dia- missed-" The Act, you will see, pro- vides that, it is not the duty of the specially appointed officer ONLY, but of EVERY policeman, constable and inspect- or to enforce the provisions of this ASt. Yours truly Jxo. Lave Stock Markets. Toronto, Feb 4 -The run at the City- Cattle itycattle Market to -day was 70 loads, with 1,236 head of cattle, 2{1 sheep and lambs; 500 hogs, and 168 calves. With another good run of cattle in a the market to -day prices were well maintained for anything of good quality but for medium to common quality the °-market was slow and weaker. There was very little demand for the class of medium light but :her cattle. Besides being of a poor quality generally, the class of light butcher cattle, weighing 7.in the neighborhood of sea lbs., for which there was for a time a very good market has gone very much out of fash- ion of late, and the demand now is for a t!gaud thick class of bather cattle any- where from 1,160 to 1,15) lbs. The ex- port market is quite active and firm. In the sheep and lamb market sheep are steady, Iambs firmer. a Hog market firmer and 25o higher. • The following are the quotations: Eaporters' cattle— Per 100 lbs.
