The July 1st deadline for sewer hookups
has passed with 70 homes yet to be
connected, assistant clerk Ruth Sauve
informed Brussels council at their regular
meeting on Monday evening, July 5th.
Surprised by the high figure, councillor
Gordon Workman "didn't think there was
that many connections to be completed. I:
thought there would be about IS, no more
than 20."
Suggested by councillor Hank 'fen Pas was
to move the deadline ahead to September 1st,
1982 in order to give the last 70 homeowners
ample time to make connections.
Council decided if connections were not
completed by this date, the owners would be
levied a fine. As of July 1. owners will be
charged the normal levy, even if not
connected.
In other news: council opened tenders for
the village owned, three point hitch cement
mixer. Seven tenders were received with
tenders ranging from $103.60 to 5500. A
tender of 5450 submitted by the Brussels
cemetery board was accepted.
Councillor Workman said "the cemetery
board are the people to have it. We've got
free use of the mixer when :we need it." In
their tender the boatel informed council the
town could use the mixer and tractor owned
by the board Whenever necessary.
Three tenders were received for a step van,
formerly used by the fire department as an
equipment vehicle. Tenders ranged from
$3§0 to $562 with Murray Stewart of
Milverton submitting the high tender.
"I think we should let it go for .5562
although I think it is ,worth niore. It's dirt
cheap at that price,'.said councillor Ten Pas.
Council agreed to sett the van, although
most voiced their opinion of the low price.

BRUSSELS CEMETERY
MONUMENTS
In an effort to improve the Brussels cemetery, the
Board is commencing a program to straighten the
leaning stones
Excluding the old whi(e slab markers there are
approximately 150 stones that have become slanted and
are in need of repair
All monuments and mirkers in the cemetery are, and
remain the property of the plot owners it is, therefore.
the responsibility of the plot owners to keep them in
proper state of repair Perpetual care provides for the
care and maintenance of the plot only
Where the monuments have not helm satisfactorily
maintained taV the plot owners, the board is empowered
by the Ontario Cemetery Act to make the necessary
repairs and assess reasonable charges to the plot
owners
Where the tilting problem exists, the hoard requests
the co-operation of the plot owners for their heirs,
assignee's, or 'descendants) in straightening the
monuments in order that they more fittingly
commemorate those interred, and that the appearance
of the cemetery may be enhanced
Re Perpetual Care
Before perpetual rare, some plot owners elected to
keep their plots themselves, 50011P paid the cemetery to
do so on an annual basis, SOMP plots remained
untended This system resulted in a varied and
somewhat unkept general, appearance of the
cemetery
Now perpetual care funds pro, vide for continuing
levelling, seeding and grass cutting throughout the
entire cemetery
However the maintenance of stones a'nd markers is
still the responsibility of the plot owners The owners
may make needed repairs themselves or have the
cemetery dO it
The Board wishes to thank those who have already
examined the stones of their concern and have
responded with the required funds where straightening
is needed •
