Cl raryca HFAN hands out local food hero awards Laura Broadley Clinton News Record The Huron Food Action Network knows that heroes don't always come with capes and masks. On September 26 HFAN honoured local food heroes in an awards cere- mony at the Bayfield Town Hall dur- ing the food charter launch party. Sophie and Christian Burdan of Red Cat Farm won the "Best Farm Tour 2015': Sarah and Peter Gusso of Part II Bistro in Blyth won for "Most Local Restaurant". Nathan Swartz, food systems coordinator with HFAN, said the restaurant won because of its menu, saying it sourced many local ingredients and utilized as many as possible. Marlene Beyerlein of Bayfield Berry Farm had overwhelming sup- port in the "Most Loved Farmers' Market Vendor" category. Jim and Catherine Landsborough of the Maelstrom Winery, won "Most Potential". The HFAN food charter is a set of commitments for the community to cultivate a sustainable local food system. According to HFAN, sustainability means meeting the needs of the pre- sent community without jeopardiz- ing the ability of the future commu- nity to meet its needs, linking the economy, environment and society, local focus within a global context, and creating a collective to make wise decisions for the future. Joan Brady, a longtime supporter of HFAN, said there are a lot of food systems in Huron County. She said the network is a citizens group that is able to help move policy towards Sophie and Christian Burdan accepted the "Best Farm Tour 2015" for Red Cat Farm.
