It isn't just other motorists and
bicyclists we have to keep our eye on
when we're on the road. Wildlife, spe-
cifically turtles, use our roadways too
with sometimes devastating
consequences.
Lauren Schmuck, species at risk
technician with the Huron Steward-
ship Council, presented Central
Huron council with a proposal to put
up signs along municipal roads to
remind motorists to keep an eye out
for wildlife.
The HSC has initiated a pilot pro-
ject to put the signs up where reptiles
are at a higher risk of being hit by
vehicles.
"The goal of the signs is to promote
the sharing of the roads with humans
and wildlife," said Schmuck.
Schmuck said there have been
studies that show wildlife crossing
signs would be a cost effective way to
reduce threats to these animals.
In Southern Ontario you are never
more than one mile away from a road,
according to the HSC.
"If you happen to be in a car, that's
fantastic. If you're a reptile, not such a
great thing," said Schmuck.
Between 2012 and 2013 Schmuck's
colleague bicycled thousands of kilo-
metres of road
The HSC has already acquired the
signs it wishes to erect in municipali-
ties across the county. The signs have
images of a turtle and snake with the
words "Please slow down, wildlife
crossing" across the top and bottom.
Two locations in Central Huron
have been identified by the HSC, in
consultation with the Ausable Bay-
field Conservation Authority, for the
sign placement. Schmuck said the
signs are usually placed near ponds,
rivers and wetlands where reptiles
tend to congregate.
The Hullett Marsh and on Front
Road, east of Clinton, are the pro-
posed sites for the signs.
