A popular event that
invites people to take a
"coffee break" in support
of the Alzheimer Society is
back.
The annual Coffee Break
was officially launched at
McDonalds in Goderich
and Exeter on Friday, Sep-
tember 18.
Additionally, proceeds
from all coffee sales during
the 30th anniversary cele-
bration of McDonalds in
Goderich held on Saturday,
September 19 went towards
the Alzheimer Society.
Joining staff and volun-
teers from the Alzheimer
Society on Friday were
Huron -Bruce Conservative
candidate Ben Lobb and
Liberal candidate Allan
Thompson.
Throughout the fall, the
Alzheimer Society is
encouraging individuals
and groups to host their
own Coffee Break events.
"Our goal is to have 100
events in Huron County,"
said Brittany Williams, Alz-
heimer Society events
coordinator.
The society provides the
coffee and information for
the events.
According to Williams,
events can happen pri-
vately in homes through
dinner and tea parties.
"We also have a lot of
church groups and book
clubs - basically anyone in
a social circle," Williams
added.
Coffee Break will con-
tinue through the rest of
the month and October.
"We've tried to make it
easy for people - more and
more people are associat-
ing Coffee Break with their
holiday parties," Williams
said.
The Huron County Alz-
heimer Society's goal for
Coffee Break this year is
$20,000.
They raised approxi-

OPP
NORTH HURON MAN FACES
MULTIPLE SEXUAL ASSAULT
CHARGES
North Huron - A 71 -year-old former
Scout leader, was arrested yesterday and
faces multiple charges for sexual assault.
North Huron resident, Martin Cretier,
is facing four counts of indecent assault
and four counts of act of gross indecency.
The alleged incidents took place when
Cretier was volunteering as a Scout lead-
er in 1976 and 1978 near Wingham.
Cretier was released from custody with
a court date set for October 15.
KEYS IN VEHICLES LEAD TO
CRIMES OF OPPORTUNITY
Central Huron - OPP officers were
able to recover the 2009 Chrysler PT
Cruiser that had been stolen from a drive-
way located on High Street in Clinton.
Officers received information that the
stolen vehicle had been abandoned in
the rear parking lot of the Canada Post
located on King Street in Clinton. Officers
attended on scene and found the lightly
damaged vehicle. Officers believe the
vehicle was likely taken off-road as they
found brush debris underneath the front
bumper.
Over the last two months OPP offi-
cers have investigated 13 stolen vehicles
throughout the county. Although this lat-
est pickup truck theft occurred in a town,
officers have noted many of these stolen
vehicles have been stolen from our rural
areas. In at least one case a pickup truck
was stolen while a farmer was working in
a nearby field.
Six pickup trucks, five cars and three
ATVs have been stolen during this time.
Eight of these vehicles were left insecure
with the ignition key easily accessible in-
side the vehicle.
Huron County OPP officers would like
to remind everyone to "Protect Your Prop-
erty". Remember, a thief can steal your
vehicle in less than 30 seconds. A vehicle
with an unlocked door or an open window
is an easy target. Protect your vehicle
and valuables from theft.
Always roll up your vehicle's windows
Lock the doors and pocket the keys
when you park your car.
• Always park your vehicle in a well -lit
area.
• If you have a garage, use it and lock
the garage door as well as your vehicle.
• Never leave your vehicle unattended
while it is running
• Never leave valuable objects or pack-
ages in full view.
• Watch out for suspicious people or
activity in your neighbourhood. Call po-
lice immediately, don't delay; your infor-
mation may help solve a crime.
Any person with information regard-
ing these incidences or any other should
immediately contact Huron OPP at 1-888-
310-1122 or 519-524-8314.
Should you wish to remain anonymous,
you may call Crime Stoppers at 1 -800 -222 -
TIPS (8477), where you may be eligible to
receive a cash reward of up to $2,000.
DRIVER FAILS TO STOP FOR
STOPPED SCHOOL BUS
South Huron - Less than two weeks
into the school year and police have al-
ready charged a local driver with failing
to stop for a stopped school bus. Fortu-
nately this time a collision did not occur
and nobody was injured.
On the morning of September 14 an
OPP officer was completing school zone
patrols when he observed a stopped
school bus with the overhead red signal -
lights flashing and the stop arm activat-
ed. While the school bus driver was as-
sisting a student onto the bus a Pontiac
torrent approached. The officer watched
as the driver of the torrent failed to come
to a stop for the school bus and contin-
ued on through the stop sign. The officer
subsequently pulled the vehicle over and
spoke with the driver.
Huron County OPP would like to remind
all drivers to be extra careful and obser-
vant for children on or near roadways par-
ticularly during the hours when children
are being picked up and dropped off from
school. Huron OPP would also like to re-
mind all drivers the importance of know-
ing the law as it applies to school buses
stopped on the roadway with alternating
red lights flashing.
Every driver, when meeting on a high-
way, other than a highway with a median
strip, a stopped school bus that has its
overhead red signal lights flashing, shall
stop before reaching the bus and not pro-
ceed until the bus moves or the overhead
lights have stopped flashing. When ap-
proaching a school bus from the rear that
has its overhead signal lights flashing the
driver shall stop at least 20 meters before
reaching the bus and not proceed until
the bus moves or the overhead lights have
stopped flashing.
The penalties upon conviction are as
follows:
• First offence - fine of $400 - $2,000
and six demerit points
• Each subsequent conviction - $1,000
to $4,000 fine and/or imprisonment up
to six months
Something else vehicle owner's and
drivers should be aware of - School bus
drivers and other witnesses can report
vehicles that have illegally passed a
school bus. If you are the vehicle's reg-
istered owner, these same fines may be
applied to you.
