Health unit merger
a real possibility
Laura Broadley
Clinton News Record
The conversation sur-
rounding a merger between
the Huron and Perth health
units have never made it this
far.
"We are leaps and bounds
ahead of what we've done in
the past," said Tyler Hessel,
chair of the Huron County
Board of Health.
Hessel said as of now both
units have agreed to princi-
pals, terms of reference and
a communication strategy.
"That's a very good start-
ing point, said Hessel.
Both health units are
going into this with a posi-
tive approach this time
around and Hessel said
they're looking forward to
making something come
together if it makes sense for
each health unit.
"We want to make sure
we're going to provide better
service if we're going to be
moving forward as a larger
health unit," said Hessel.
Plans haven't been
finalized but Hessel said
they're currently in a draft
mode to look at bringing
in a consultant to work
through some questions
about amalgamation,
which is potentially being
funded by the provincial
government.
Over the last few years
the Huron and Perth
health units have been in
talks about a potential
merger but nothing has
ever materialized.
The conversation was
renewed this past March
when the two organiza-
tions announced it would
reconsider the merger
using a working group to
looking at the benefits and
drawbacks.

It's just not for television
and reality stars. The Amaz-
ing Race is happening in
your backyard.
Teams will make their
way through Central Huron
and Bluewater taking part
in challenges by following
clues and maps.
Following two successful
years there is a bit of a
change up this year. The
race is going "green" with
all the challenges focusing
on environmentally
friendly ideas like compost-
ing and clean water.
Specific details sur-
rounding activities are
intentionally kept vague,
said organizer Erin
Samuell.
"[The teams] show up
and there's a bit of sponta-
neity. They don't really
know the next thing that's
going to happen,"
explained Samuell.
Last year the event was
held over two days but this
year everything will take

The Amazing Race will go through Bayfield and Clinton on October 17. Teams of two to four are
encouraged to show their creativity by dressing up. The challenges will all incorporate a "green"
theme like composting and clean water.
place on October 17.
"We're trying to keep the
action right in the village of
Bayfield and in Clinton as
opposed to being all over
the place," said Samuell.
Spectators are welcome
and encouraged, so come
out and see the action.
"We're trying to make it a
little more visible. We're try-
ing to encourage some spec-
tators, as opposed to in the
past when they've been all
over the place it's harder for
spectators to know where
the action is," said Samuell.
The race will be held in
Bayfield in the morning with
the afternoon taking place in
Clinton.
If you're interested Samuell
encourages you to register
early as there is a limited
amount of space. You are able
to enter your team of two to
four people with a cost of $85
per team with proceeds going
to the Huron Perth United
Way. All teams are required to
have a vehicle and cell phone.
Samuell said the event is a
great way for some friendly
competition between busi-
nesses and encourages busi-
ness teams to participate.
In the past teams have
dressed up and shown their
creativity, which could help
your team cinch the top
spot.
"While the event is a
race, the winner is not nec-
essarily the team who
comes in first. There are dif-
ferent ways to gain points,"
said Samuell.
"Creativity is a big part of
this," she added. Being
green, helpful and encour-
aging can also add points to
your tally.
All teams are asked to
meet in Bayfield at 8 a.m.
for a firemen's breakfast
and to receive their race
kits.

Buffalo Sabre Ryan
O'Reilly's impaired driving
case has been adjourned for
another month.
The 24 -year-old NHL star
was charged with impaired
driving and failing to remain
at a crash scene after his vin-
tage 1951 pickup truck
smashed into a Lucan Tim
Hortons over the summer.
O'Reilly, whose case
returns Oct. 1, wasn't in the
courtroom for the
appearance.
After reporting to training
camp this week, O'Reilly told
Buffalo News that he was
sorry for the charges and
expected the case would be
"sorted out" this week.
O'Reilly, a Varna native,
was traded to Buffalo from
Colorado last spring, signing
a seven-year contract worth
$52.5 million.
