Terry Fox's memory lives on thirty-five years later

Terry Fox was only
22 -years -old when he lost
his battle with bone cancer.
He was a young man who
inspired a nation to commit
to supporting cancer
research.
All across the country
thousands of people will
help celebrate the Cana-
dian hero's legacy on Sep-
tember 20.
The Terry Fox Founda-
tion raises about $20 mil-
lion for cancer research in
Canada each year. It is an
organization dedicated to
raising money and keeping
Fox's memory alive.
Kim Smith, community
events coordinator with the
Terry Fox Foundation, said
this year marks the 35th
anniversary of Fox's Mara-
thon of Hope. Smith said
the foundation is touched
by Canadians who are still
dedicated to Fox's original
cause.
Fox is a great example for
young people who need a
tangible hero for a worthy
cause, said Smith.
Thirty-five years later
there is still a lot of work to
be done in the battle
against cancer.
Not only does his story
still resonate but the need
for research is still current,"
said
The Clinton Terry Fox is
sponsored by the Clinton
Kinettes every year. Event
organizer, Angela Cullen
said Fox's legacy is impor-
tant because cancer has
affected so many people's
lives.
Fox's message is espe-
cially poignant for Cullen
as she is a cancer survivor
herself. She said cancer has
touched the lives of many
people in the club making
it all the more important to
carry on the legacy.
"We think it's important
because cancer research is
imperative. I know I
wouldn't be here if Terry Fox
hadn't started his run and
raised so much money for
cancer research," said
Cullen.
The Clinton Terry Fox run
starts at Millenium Park on
September 20 at 1 p.m. Reg-
istration starts at 12 p.m. and
is open for walkers or run-
ners who want to follow the
10 kilometre route.
Cullen said one of the best
parts of the Terry Fox run is
that is doesn't matter how
much participants pledge.
"It's not just about the
money, it's about the sup-
port and the whole
momentum of it. It's actu-
ally very emotional," said
