St. Anne's students returned to class yesterday. Principal Jodi
Kuran said the school has seen an increase in enrollment and is
looking forward to dive into the new school year.
Clinton welcomes students back to town

The sound of feet pound-
ing the pavement each lunch
hour has returned to Clinton
as the school year
commences.
Over 1000 students will
return to Clinton's two high
schools to either continue or
to start their secondary
school experience.
Jodi Kuran, principal of St.
Anne's, starts each school
year off with a theme to
inspire the students. After
consulting with staff and the
student cabinet Kuran
decides on a theme carry
through the year.
The theme for this year is
"We should for the common
good': Different "shoulds" will
be introduced throughout,
like "We should love for the
common good or we should
give for the common good."
"It's all just thinking about
what some decisions benefit
me but don't benefit the
greater good of people. So
we need to always focus on
what's best for everyone, for
the common good," said
Kuran.
This is also a landmark
year for St. Anne's as it cele-
brate its 20th anniversary.
There will be celebrations
throughout but culminating
in a party later in the year. To
start off the special time, the
school has paved the walk-
way from the parking lot to
the track so all students have
access. The laneway is to
honour a former student
who passed away recently.
"We're going to call it
`Lara's Lane' in honour of
our dear Lara," said Kuran.
Down the street, CHSS
principal George McEwan
said there are also exciting
things happening at his
school this year. Every other
year the students participate
in CHSS's biggest fundraiser,
called the "Red Walk': The
student body walks from the
school to the Varna Commu-
nity Complex, where fun and
games are waiting for them.
The fundraiser allows the
school to support various
services with the majority
going to the athletic
program.
McEwan said CHSS was
one of the only schools in
the Avon Maitland District
School Board that had all its
grade nine students coming
in with iPads through the
Next Generation Learning
and is continuing with the
program this year.
"We're growing in that
program and hoping to
enhance the learning experi-
ence with the technology. It's
an initiative that the board
undertook last year to put
the technology in the hands
of all of our students," said
McEwan.
Improving academic goals
in the literacy test and EQAO
math are targets for the
school year no matter how
good it was in the past, said
McEwan.
But McEwan wants to
make in clear that everyone
is welcome at CHSS and has
something to offer the
school.
"We are very keen to make
sure students know that we
mean it when we say that
every student is welcome
here. Every person who is
part of the CHSS community
belongs here and needs to
feel like they belong, needs
to feel that they are safe and
happy in school."
