Among her many accomplishments, she has now added an official Iron Butt Association certification. Gray completed her first sad- dle sore long distance motorcy- cle endurance ride on August 27. The coveted certification requires the rider to cover a minimum of 1000 miles (1610 kilometres) distance within 24 hours. She succeeded by riding around Lake Huron and Geor- gian Bay. The IBA certification was something for Gray to try after 31 years as a rider. "My style of riding is pretty extreme anyway," said Gray, siting her years in Europe rid- ing for hours around a track. The only problem she had was from Barrie to Clinton at about 1:30 a.m. when there was think fog blocking her view. "From that time until my 5:15 arrival was pretty brutal just because there was no one, no where," she said. A requirement of the certi- fication is that the rider has to start and end in the same place. Gray decided to come back to Clinton where her grandfather, Hugh Hawkins, was a well known member of the community. Her moth- er's side of the family has a long history in the town and Gray said it was fitting to start and end her ride at Hugh Hawkins Park. Hawkins owned a heating and plumbing business that he ran through a hardware store, he was very into politics and was a member of the Kiwanis and Lions Club as well as terms as president of Contributed photo Vicki Gray completed her ride on August 27 to achieve the official Iron Butt Association certification. Gray started and ended her journey at Hugh Hawkins Park. Hugh Hawkins was a well known community member in Clinton and Gray's grandfather. the Western Ontario Athletic Association. Gray has made a lot of con- nections during her short stay here over the last few weeks. She learned that her grandfa- ther's park is the only parkin Huron County that is named after someone. She also stayed at the Parker House Motel where the original builder, Johnny Parker, was very good friends with Hawkins. With her experience level, Gray expected to make it back on time and in good condition. "For me I expected to come back with not really an issue but it was really a great feeling to get it completed," Gray said Uti I rii/L/ u 214 t'r". ?Uz lowete *tut '!0 Valdteft at ?ee• 4fre4 e(4es' Clinton United Church 105 Ontario Street 519-482-9553 www.clintonunited.ca Ministry Team Word and Sacrament: Rev. At the Huron County council meeting on Septem- ber 2, Bluewater mayor, Tyler Hessel, brought coun- cil's attention to an incident that occurred when a resi- dent called 911 on August 29. At about 2:43 a.m. the caller dialed 911 to report a fire in Bayfield but instead of being directed to Stratford the call was routed to Peter- borough. The fire depart- ment didn't arrive on scene until just after 3 a.m. due to the confusion. Jeff Horseman, acting chief of emergency services for Huron County, said the department is still looking into what caused the call to be routed to Peterborough. Horseman said Huron County oversees a call answer centre with a con- tract provider. All emergency calls go through this centre then are downloaded and transferred to the appropri- ate agency like police, fire or EMS. After the transfer the call is out of the county's control, said Horseman. The investigation into what actually happened is still ongoing but Horseman said they believe that there is a possible programming error within the system from the point of download. The call was made from a cell phone, which could also have contributed to the error. "Not that the cell phone would be the issue but the cell phone tower. So, whether the cell phone tower is programmed prop- erly," said Horseman. clintonnewsrecord.com MOW Birthday Club ennett Jervis Bryson Sherle Kortney Hoggart Christopher Postl Brooklyn Vandevis Brynn Datema Maddox Scherle Rick VanderVeeken Mitchell Cooper Ciara zairdrie Ava Dawe Chase Henry Carter Sept. 5' Sept. 7 Sept. 7 Sept. 8 Sept.12 Sept.14 Ins Sept.14 Sept.16 Sept.17 Sept.17 Sept.17 Sept.17 1 you wis to ave your c I .s name & birthdate in the Birthday Club for ages 1-12, please call he office, it's free. 519-482-3443 Call our In -Store Bakery to Order BIRTHDAY CAKES OR ANY SPECIAL OCCASION CAKE • MAGIC CAKES • CHARACTER CAKES • Clinton• BIRTHDAY CAKES • Made to your specification. 0 OD 6 Mary St., Clinton • 482-9341
