The children will watch fire safety vid- eos and then have an opportunity to exit a model house filled with safe smoke. A fire engine will also be on site for tours and firefighters will be happy to answer questions. The PETS dog training centre will present an agil- ity dog demonstration at 10:30 a.m. Watch cham- pion and beginner dog and hander teams show how much they enjoy this sport. Visitors can still enjoy our regular attractions like Thomas train layouts, the model Thomas engine, a bubble centre, face painting and lots more will be offered. Many hopefuls were coming forward in the neighbouring communities to announce theywere seeking seats in the November election. In that election resi- dents from three communities were to vote as a group to choose a reeve and dep- utyreeve. • An auctioneer was being sought bythe Avon Maitland District School Board to sell six surplus school properties. Four ele- mentary schools were closed in 2000: Wal- ton, Vanastra, McCurdy and Falstaff. 25 Years Ago... • The Clinton Police received a $4,500 provincial grant to help offset the coast of overtime staffing for the RIDE program. On holidayweekends, in particular, the local police had been conducting exten- sive roadside checks to uncover liquor vio- lations. In 1990 there were 10 RIDE spot checks, 960 vehicles were stopped and four charges were laid during the Labour Dayweekend. • A mother complained that were no surgeons available at the hospital. Her son needed an operation because of appendi- citis. She said her sonwas brought to the hospital but told the area surgeons were not available. Her sonwas brought to London's Victoria Hospital for the surgery. Dr. Keith Hay said there were no staff sur- geons at the Clinton site and said itwasn't the nature of community hospitals to pro- vide extensive care. • Another tractor trailer had a collision with the Bayfield Road railway bridge. The accident ripped off part of the truck's roof, while signs on the bridge were damaged. The driver was charged by Goderich OPP with driving with a blood alcohol limit over .08 per cent. 35 Years Ago... • The 125th Bayfield Fair attracted 1,000 people. It missed the heavy rain that hit the village earlier in the morning. The Clinton Public Hospital Auxiliarywas judged the best organizational float in the annual parade. • Alarge group of Bayfield villagers marched in the parade protesting the building of a power boat marina on the east side of the bridge. • An extra $21,000 was needed to com- plete structure repairs on the Clinton town hall. Council heard that the mortar on the outer walls was weaker than they antici- pated.
