FROM THE ARCHIVES
• All was quiet on the election front for
the new municipality of Central Huron.
Many hopefuls were coming forward in
the neighbouring communities to
announce theywere seeking seats in the
November election. In that election resi-
dents from three communities were to
vote as a group to choose a reeve and dep-
utyreeve.
• An auctioneer was being sought bythe
Avon Maitland District School Board to
sell six surplus school properties. Four ele-
mentary schools were closed in 2000: Wal-
ton, Vanastra, McCurdy and Falstaff.

• The Clinton Police received a $4,500
provincial grant to help offset the coast of
overtime staffing for the RIDE program.
On holidayweekends, in particular, the
local police had been conducting exten-
sive roadside checks to uncover liquor vio-
lations. In 1990 there were 10 RIDE spot
checks, 960 vehicles were stopped and
four charges were laid during the Labour
Dayweekend.
• A mother complained that were no
surgeons available at the hospital. Her son
needed an operation because of appendi-
citis. She said her sonwas brought to the
hospital but told the area surgeons were
not available. Her sonwas brought to
London's Victoria Hospital for the surgery.
Dr. Keith Hay said there were no staff sur-
geons at the Clinton site and said itwasn't
the nature of community hospitals to pro-
vide extensive care.
• Another tractor trailer had a collision
with the Bayfield Road railway bridge. The
accident ripped off part of the truck's roof,
while signs on the bridge were damaged.
The driver was charged by Goderich OPP
with driving with a blood alcohol limit
over .08 per cent.

• The 125th Bayfield Fair attracted 1,000
people. It missed the heavy rain that hit
the village earlier in the morning. The
Clinton Public Hospital Auxiliarywas
judged the best organizational float in the
annual parade.
• Alarge group of Bayfield villagers
marched in the parade protesting the
building of a power boat marina on the
east side of the bridge.
• An extra $21,000 was needed to com-
plete structure repairs on the Clinton town
hall. Council heard that the mortar on the
outer walls was weaker than they antici-
pated. A considerable amount of rubble
fell out during the excavation and as a
result more concrete had to be put in to
rebuild.
• The total school enrollment in Huron
County schools on the first day of school
was 4,153 compared to 4,446 the previous
year
