Don Pletsch was the owner of Robert Q Travel on Clinton's Main
Street for 30 years. Mike Buckman and Paul Vandendool are the
new owners with familiar faces, they have been working at the
location for years. Pictured here, from left to right, Paul Vandendool,

Different owners but business
as usual at Robert Q Travel

Thirty years ago airfares were
calculated manually from a
subscription catalogue that was
renewed every two weeks.
For Don Pletsch things have
certainly changed since he
opened Robert Q Travel in Clin-
ton in 1985.
Before opening his travel
business Pletsch ran a televi-
sion sales and service business
in Seaforth. After realizing it was
a good time to change indus-
tries, he took a travel course at
night in Stratford.
When he first opened Robert
Q Travel there were only six,
now there are 13 franchises in
southwestem Ontario.
Over the years Pletsch has
noticed a number of changes.
There were no computers, eve-
rything was done over the
phone and email didn't exist.
He remembers having to hand-
write airline tickets but now
tickets are all done
electronically.
Some things haven't
changed though. Travel desti-
nations tend to be the same or
similar but Pletsch said there
were fewer choices with direct
flights.
Pletsch has been invited to
the Star Awards numerous
times. Top agents are invited to
destinations around the world
to be recognized. Not many
small-town agents get invited
but Pletsch has been multiple
times.
As of the beginning of Octo-
ber, Pletsch will step down as
owner of Robert Q Travel, tak-
ing a part-time position. He's
staying on the help but now it's
his turn to have a vacation.
Mike Buckman and Paul
Vandendool have taken over
the ownership of the franchise.
Buckman has been at the Clin-
ton office for 10 years after
spending many years at the
office in London.
Buckman and Vandendool
said they want to continue the
success of the past 30 years
and build on it. Keeping cli-
ents happy is the main key,
they say.
Electricity prices to increase Nov. 1
News Record staff
On Oct. 15 the Ontario
Energy Board announced
higher prices for electricity
starting Nov. 1 that will affect
most households and small
businesses.
The price is increasing by
about $4.42 per month on the
electricity line and about 3.4 per
cent on the total bill for a house-
hold that consumes 800 kWh
per month.
Increased costs from Ontario
Power Generation's nuclear
and hydro -electric power
plants make up about 40% of
this increase. Costs from renew-
able generation sources are
another driver, representing
about one-third of the increase.
The off-peak price remains
less than half the on -peak price.
This means customers who
shift use to evenings and week-
ends
eekends save 9 cents per kWh. The
typical Ontario TOU household
uses about two-thirds of its
power during off-peak hours,
and the off-peak price remains
largely unchanged.
Off-peak hours, weekdays
from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., week-
ends and holidays, will see an
increase of 0.3 cents. Mid -
peak hours, weekdays from 11
a.m. to 5 p.m., will increase 0.6
cents. On -peak hours, week-
days 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 5
p.m. to 7 p.m., will increase 1.4
cents.
