Meals on Wheels helps
maintain nutritious diet

Busy hands and feet prepare,
cook and deliver about 100
meals to people living in Huron
Countyeveryweekday.
ONE CARE Home & Com-
munity Support Services
offers meals to people who
need the help through the
Meal on Wheels program.
About 38,000 meals were
delivered to people in Huron
County and Stratford last year,
Shelley McPhee-Haist, man-
ager of communications and
fundraising of ONE CARE
said.
The idea is to help people
maintain a nutritious diet by
delivering meals right to their
door. Meals are made every-
day and can be adapted for
specialized diets.
Volunteer drivers pick up
meals from the Betty Cardno
Memorial Centre in Clinton
and distribute them through-
out the area.
While there is a cost associ-
ated with the program, it
affordable because it relies
heavily on the work of dedi-
cated volunteers, McPhee-
Haist said.
ONE CARE also offers a
transportation program to get
people wherever they need to
go, from medical appoint-
ments to grocery shopping.
McPhee-Haist said it was
especially important in a
place like Huron County

where there is no public trans-
portation. Last year volun-
teers gave about 78,000 rides.
"There's always a need for
volunteers," McPhee-Haist
said.
ONE CARE uses its pro-
grams to keep people in their
own homes for as long as
possible. In addition to the

This year the Maitland Valley Conservation
Authority received a grant from TD Friends
of the Environment Foundation to offer a free
grade four habitats program called "Home
is Habitat" to schools in our watershed.
Through this program, students learn what
plants and animals need to survive, the
importance of healthy habitats and what
species live in our own backyard. Students
were able to build an Eastern Bluebird
Nesting Box to take home. Bluebirds are
a success story of how nesting boxes can
help a species survive.
The MVCA will have had 500 students
participate by the end of October. As always,
it is the goal to provide students with hands-
on outdoor education experiences that allow
them to learn about the local environment.
Grade four and fives from Clinton Public
School built birdhouses with the Maitland
Valley Conservation Authority on Oct. 19.
