Imagine instead of police
officers in cruisers with
flashing red and blue lights
there were motorcycles - in
the middle of winter.
That was the reality for
Frank Taylor, an OPP officer
in Clinton in the 1940s.
Taylor was an officer
from 1939 until 1949. After
that his family moved to St.
Mary's before he retired
from policing in 1954.
Before the war there was
a shortage of cars so offic-
ers were required to supply
their own motorcycles in
order to do their job. Joe
Taylor, Frank's son, has a
receipt from the purchase
of his father's motorcycle.
The cost of a Harley-David-
son motorcycle cost only
$708. Purchased from J.W.
Wettlaufer Sales & Service
in Stratford, the bike cost
even less for Taylor when
he traded in his old one for
a newer model.
Being an officer wasn't
the only mark Taylor left on
the small town in mid-cen-
tury. He was an avid and
experienced boxer who
brought the sport along
with him when he moved
here.
Joe still has a boxing
poster, which advertises
prices as 25 cents for men,
10 cents for women and
children for free.
From 1932 until 1939
Taylor achieved many
accolades in the sport.
Among many others, Tay-
lor was a champion boxer
with two golden gloves
from 1938 and 1939 in
Grand Rapids and Detroit
respectively.
