Coffee break at Radford's to support Alzheimer Society
Brenda Radford
Special to the News Record
Wow! What a difference a
week makes. On Thanksgiv-
ing weekend, a great deal of
celebrating was done out-
doors in the warm sun-
shine. It was noted at our
home that the trees were
not showing much fall col-
our yet. This past weekend
we experienced a thick
blanket of wet snow and
the trees had not only
shown much colour but
lost a lot of leaves.
Congratulations and
best wishes are extended
to Stanley Airdrie and
Mikyla Miller who were
joined in marriage on Oct.
17 in London. Long time
residents of the village will
remember Stan, son of
Dorothy Airdrie, who grew
up in our midst. Stan and
Mikyla live in London and
their family includes
Mikyla's daughter, Mayah,
and their daughter, Keady.
Let's do coffee! Rad -
ford's Farm Equipment/
Post Office invite you to
drop by on Oct. 29 to
share a coffee and treat in
support of the Alzheimer
Society of Huron County.
This disease affects many
families in our area and
the monies raised through
coffee breaks fund
research. I hope you will
find time that day to visit.
Minding your p's and q's
is a warning to be on your
best behaviour. The
expression may have orig-
inated in the 17th century
in the French Court.
Persons learning to dance
were reminded to mind
their feet [pieds] and tails
of their wigs [queues]
when they took to the
floor. Seems one could
lose their elaborate wig
when bowing too low.
Nearer home barkeeps
kept an account of how
much beer their patrons
drank by marking pints as
a "p" and quarts as a "q':
Ergo patrons were well
advised to mind their
drinks, p's and q's, so as
not to be over charged at
the end of the night.
This week ponder

LONDESBOROUGH UNITED
CHURCH
The sanctuary of Londesbor-
NetworkC LASSI
ough United Church was taste-
fully decorated for the fall sea-
son on Oct 11.
The Thanksgiving ser-
vice began with a selec-
tion by the Praise Band,
Ev'ry Day Is a Day of
Thanksgiving. This group
also offered Spirit, Spirit
of Gentleness during the
receiving of the morning's
offering. Thanks to God
was the anthem sung by
the senior choir.
This theme of giving
thanks for all our blessings
was included in the chil-
dren's time. Rev. Fletcher
remarked to the boys and
girls just how many people
had to be thanked for the
gift of a loaf of bread, the
farmer, the baker, the store
owner, etc. Ultimately all
gift[s] can be tracked back
to God.
"Don't Say It - Be It",
loosely translated as be
thankful in actions, was
the title of Rev. Fletcher's
message to the adults.
Supporting scripture pas-
sages were 1 Chronicles 16
: 31-34 and Colossians 3:
12-17. The responsive
psalm was Psalm 92.
A quote in the order of ser-
vice from John F. Ken-
nedy reflects this theme: "As
we express our gratitude, we
must never forget that the
highest appreciation is not to
utter words, but to live by
them."
Terry noted that Canadi-
ans are known to be the
most vocal about saying
"thank you". But is it
enough? He suggests we all
should not just think
thankfulness but express it
and act on it. The term "pay
it forward" is becoming a
popular way for expressing
our thanks and goodwill for
others. The word "thanks"
can be empty and mean-
ingless without actions to
back them up. Rev. Fletcher
charged congregants to
reach out in action.
Londesborough United
will hold their anniversary
service this coming Oct. 25.
Rev. Marion Jackson Tyler
is the guest speaker for the
service. The guest choir,
"The Men of Note", a choir
of men from all over Huron
County, promise to bring
God's word through music.
Re -scheduled from Oct.
19 to Oct. 26, the Londes-
borough UCW will meet
beginning at 7:30 p.m.
