CIB awarded 70th anniversary St. Anne's sports teams start off strong
Friendship Tulip Garden
News Record staff
Central Huron's Commu-
nities in Bloom committee is
the recipient of one of 140,
70th anniversary Dutch -
Canadian Friendship Tulip
Gardens.
The gardens are being dis-
tributed across Canada in
celebration of the first gift of
100,000 Dutch tulip bulbs
sent to Canadians in 1945 as
a symbol of appreciation for
the role Canadian soldiers
played in the liberation of
the Netherlands and the
hospitality Canada provided
to the Dutch royal family in
Ottawa during WWII.
Central Huron CAO,
Peggy Van Mierlo-West,
said it's a really great expe-
rience for the municipality
to be celebrating a part of
Canadian history.
Co-chair Marg Ander-
son said Central Huron is
"very fortunate" to have
received one of these gar-
dens as the Canadian
Garden Council, the
organization behind the
Friendship Tulip Garden
program, received more
than 400 application.
The garden consists of 700
red and while tulip bulbs
and was donated by Vesey's
Bulbs of PEI.
The 140 gardens planted
across the country will be
symbolically linked to a 70th
anniversary Dutch -Cana-
dian Friendship Tulip Gar-
den to be planted this fall in
Canada's capital by the
National Capital Commis-
sion and showcased during
the 2016 Canadian Tulip
Festival.
The garden will be featured
on the 2016 edition of Cana-
da's Garden Route (www.can-
adasgardenroute.ca).
Planting will take place
on Oct. 17 at the cenotaph
in Library Park starting at
2:30 p.m.
