CNR School on Wheels future is
uncertain in Clinton
Laura Broadley
Clinton News Record
The CNR School on Wheels is a
piece of Clinton history but its
future in this town is uncertain.
It cannot sustain itself, said Ray
Letheran when he addressed Cen-
tral Huron council on Oct. 5.
Letheran is the chair of the
CNR school on wheels board,
which has been together for just
over a year. That board has
fulfilled its original intention and
will now be disbanded.
Council discussed the idea of
getting the school car assessed to
see whether it could withstand
moving to another location.
Central Huron CAO Peggy Van
Mierlo-West said nothing has been
decided yet and the next step is to
create a committee of dedicated
local citizens that will be able to
determine the future of the CNR
School on Wheels in Clinton.
The Amazing Race is cancelled
The 2015 Bluewater and Cen-
tral Huron Amazing Race has
been cancelled.
The event was supposed to
take place on Oct. 17 but organ-
izers said there wasn't enough
participants.
It was the second year for a
fundraiser for the United Way
Perth -Huron but at this point it
wasn't going to make enough
money to benefit the
organization.
Central Huron CAO Peggy Van
Mierlo-West was confident that
the fundraiser would be back
next year.

There are people who do their
job and go home. There are also
individuals who consistently go
above and beyond the call of duty.
Each year the Huron County
police services, fire services boards
and the emergency medical ser-
vices department nominate a
member of its team who it believes
has done an outstanding job.
At the Huron County council
meeting on October 7, warden Paul

responders. He said their dedica-
tion to the job was "phenomenal"
and the award was meant to recog-
nize them for their time and efforts.
Fire fighter of the year was
awarded to Doug Harkes, deputy
chief of the Howick fire
department.
Steve Gardiner, Huron County
fire coordinator, said Harkes was a
dedicated fire fighter who has
moved up the ranks in the depart-
ment from Lieutenant to deputy
chief, while balancing his role as a
business owner.
Joel Paakkunainen, who was rec-
ognized as paramedic of the year,
has been a paramedic in the area
for 10 years, said his supervisor,
Marc Crawford.
Paakkunainen now works in Bay-
field, but has also worked in
Goderich and Wingham as a para-
medic and is also a volunteer fire
fighter in Bluewater. He has organ-
ized a food drive, which brought
over 6,500 pounds of food and
goods to the area.
The police officer of the year
award went to Lincoln Dinning,
who wasn't able to attend the
council meeting but will be
awarded at a later date.
"I am very proud to recognize
these individuals for their out-
standing service to our communi-
ties. On behalf of the residents of
Huron County, thank you to all first
responders for providing assistance
to those in need," said Gowing.
